I dont know what happened last year, if it was the coach, the gm, or the players but in 12-13 komarov, orr, and mcclarren all they did was cause poop all night long. Hit everything that moves, fight and intimidate everyone. Then 13-14 comes along, they lose Komarov cuz they wont pay him like 1.5 mil or something at the time and instead of doing the exact same thing you did last year, which got you to the play-offs for the first time in 8 years, you play these guys 2 mins a night if that or send them to the AHL. Who's (frank)ing idea was that? Last year the leafs were one of the softest teams in the league, and on paper (from what most people think will make the team) looks like its going to be the same thing again

Teams figured it out, to not engage them and fight with them. They became redundant. They need to be able to play, to be effective.

I hear ya, but did you really see Orr and McLaren trying to engage like they did the year before? It's like they tried to change their game or Carlyle was mismanaged them. They simply weren't the same players as they were the year before.

You could probably count on one hand how many times Orr and McLaren fought COMBINED. That's screams individual change, not the entire league deciding not to fight them.

McLaren fought a lot for how little he played. 77 PIMS..he played exactly 108 total minutes of hockey. what more can you ask of the guy

Orr was never the same, after Parros got hurt fighting him. MacLaren missed most of last year. He should be the resident tough guy.

I remember seeing that game and yes, it was all good, but like the panel said, they had the 6th best penalty kill at the time. Last year, they where 29th. Makes a big difference, when you can't kill a penalty. Still, they are a liability on the ice. Some teams would change on the fly and catch them on the ice and the Leafs would be hemmed in and either took a penalty, or got scored on.

like i said in an earlier post, I think most of their additions is summer was to improve the PK, get that PK out of the basement and they very well could be a play off team

What pisses me off about Lieweke's comments are he's already said hes leaving town but the rest of the organization has to answer for his comments. He should not be talking to the media like that with 1 foot out the door.

Well Orr is not an NHL player anymore so let's get someone like he use to be.

...And 30 of those 77 mins are 3 misconducts, while another 12 mins were in minor/double minor penalties.

77-30-12=35mins... 7 (frank)ing fights... S-E-V-E-N fights whiling appearing in 27 games!!

So "what more can you ask of the guy?" How about more than roughly 1 scrap every 4 games from your supposed enforcer?!?!?

It had to do with the penalty kill not being effective. Playing 2 minutes a game, isn't going to help you pad your fighting numbers. I like MacLaren, but Orr needs to be put out to pasture and let MacLaren be the number one fighter on the team.

Didn't Ashton break his hand in training camp last year? Maybe that had something to do with it.

Tim WANTS to be shown the door. This is all part of an early exit strategy for him.

Think about it, the formula is simple:
1. Tim runs mouth
2. Tim pisses off ownership
3. Tim gets shown the door
4. Tim gets to focus on other current and future interests/projects/jobs
5. Tim still on MLSE payroll until next summer

Therefore, TIM WINS!

So they were the 6th best penalty kill at the time, last year were 39th without Orr, and Maclaren.

I don't get your logic here.

If I had to choose I'd take McLaren over Orr all... day... long.

Yes, Frazer injured his hand and that definitely impacted his season, but I think the larger issue is how Randy mismanaged a number of players.

The bottom line is that Carlyle is not getting the most out of his players and it's he who should be put out to pasture. Randy's style is simply outdated and does not fit well with the direction that Shanny wants to take this team.

they need to have a good penatly kill in order for orr and mcclarren to run around and intimidate and occasionally take penalties to be effective without hurting the team.

I dont think they were 39th either.....

Nobody said that Shanny was a "hockey guru," but you can't argue his pedigree.

Does Shanny have the same pedigree as Yzerman? That's debatable, but I'd say pretty damn close! That said, look how Stevie Y is doing in Tampa. If Shanny can do A FRACTION of what he's done for TB, then the Leafs are heading in the right direction for the first time in a while.

I'm really curious to see who Shanny brings in after Nonis and Carlyle.

I hope it works out, just think some people are putting too much on Shanny as the answer. Great player and seems like a good guy in public, just no track record yet.
Maybe this will be his start.

Oh please Mike. I read and like your articles. Defending multi millionaires who get paid to play a sport because potentially some of them were critiqued for having a bad attitude (which some of them do (not saying which ones)) is not Nonis' responsibility or sports journalistss, nor the fans. These guys are highly paid, highly performing super beings. They don't need anyone's help to kiss their booboos. I understand you are trying to be positive and help by reflecting that in your blog . Ultimately it falls on the players to show that he's full of sheet. I love the Leafs but some of them do stink. Not because of skill.... Because of effort and attitude.
