So what do you guys think? Any surprises for who makes the Leafs team this year? - JVR_42_PK81
I think Colton Orr is on the opening night roster...if that's considered a surprise

no way You will see him one last time in a Leafs sweater this pre season. After he gets cut once Shanny and Dubas see him in his first shift.
Honestly if Shanny and Dubas weren't here Orr being in the opening lineup would of happened. |

how can you say "would of happened", when it hasn't happened yet |

Goes to show what kind of loser that Nonis and company are. Liewikie is right on the money, but no one else has had the balls to say anything about the character of the dressing room leaders. They may have great stats, but they are losers, plain and simple. Kessel makes $8 million to score 35 goals a year. He doesn't back check hard enough, or work along the boards to clear the zone, so is he worth it? Phaneuf makes $7 million a year, to play defense on a bottom feeder defensive team. He worries more about the bling and the closet, then he does winning. The Leafs don't need these kind of contracts being paid out to one dimensional players. |

Sadly, that's probably true.
Seriously, Carlyle and Nonis need to go ASAP. If the organization is moving toward a "new school" way of thinking," how are old "old school" minds going to effectively implement and deliver that?
Almost seems like mixing oil and water would be easier. |

They are sacrificial lambs, being led out to the slaughter. Reality is, this team is not near good enough to make the playoffs. Shanahan will use this year, to get his feet wet and become full time GM next year. He will then pick his coach, for next year.

They may keep him, just for certain nights. Against teams that like to brawl and take liberties, he's worth keeping around. I'd rather have MacLaren, because he's younger and can actually forecheck. |

yes but i think orr is the better fighter. Unless they think bodie can handle the heavyweights 1 of them makes this roster. They are pretty soft upfront. Well all over TBH |

Nah. You're getting sucked in to the MLSE politicking. Kessel and Dion's extensions were signed while Lieweke was actually running the show. If there is anyone to answer for the core player extensions, its Tim.
He is firing darts in all directions at this point to hasten his own exit. I would be shocked if he is still in Toronto by American Thanskgiving. |

I agree that Shanahan will pick his coach for next year. However, I do think this is a bubble playoff team. |

whose gonna stand up for this team when teams start to steam roll them? They signed lots of players, but didnt get tougher. When komarov was running around like a wild man 2 years ago orr and mccallren were fighting nightly because of it. Teams would of killed him if those 2 guys werent on the team. The leafs need someone who can fight. I dont think bodie or clarkson, or (break my nose) carter will get the job done |

The only way that this team gets in, is very few injuries, Gardiner and Rielly turn into absolute studs on the blueline, Lupul regains his touch around the net and we find a decent winger to play with him and Kadri. That's allot of if's, that need to go right, for them to squeak in. As I see it, Shanahan has already surmised that this team isn't getting in, this year. He wants to see what he's got and make moves accordingly. His coach and GM are lame ducks and will be gone by the end of the year, or in Carlyle's case, sometime after New Years. They just don't have the elite talent, to compete for a playoff spot. I see them at 11 or 12 in the conference.

Orr didn't do (frank)all last year. He's pointless if other teams are going to avoid fighting him. It makes no sense to waste a roster spot on Orr if he's not going to be effective in his role. |

What you say may happen, absolutely.
However, if things go well, the deeper pool of bottom six options will take some heat off the top six - imo, they will roll 4 lines all season so that Kessel, JVR, Bozak and Lupes are not out of gas by February. The defence is still clearly a huge question mark, a wild card, really. If it plays with more consistency, and Bernier has no long stretches of injury time, they could be a bubble playoff team. |

Their PK has been brutal since the 05 lockout. The only time it wasn't in the bottom 5 of the league they made the play-offs. I think most of the additions this off-season were to address this (polak, komarov, winnik ect.) If they get their pk into the top 10 I think it is very possible they make the play-offs. Unless Bernier gets injuried or has a horrible year |

There's logic to that idea, but it takes away from the top 6 scoring, if they get less minutes. It only works if they get on the scoresheet more often. It will help long term, as the top 6 will have more gas, down the stretch. It's all about the Defense and if it can withstand the season.
