Party hard Bill, always a pleasure to read your stuff. Especially being in a place with limited Flyers coverage.

That defense will be ugly, no way around it but I enjoy giving the kids a bigger role on offense. One slight adjustment I hope Berube makes it ensuring Giroux's line gets the most minutes. As he goes, the team goes. Happened far too often at the end of the season, and playoffs that Couturier and Read were getting top minutes.

The pendulum cannot swing too far D-first, you play to win as a priority, not shut down the other team.

Doing so would also allow Couturier some more favourable match ups instead of going head to head with the other team's best and Giroux sitting on the bench with Voracek.

Will be fun to see the youth grow.

And now you can plainly see, Mr Hextall, why I believe we should extend Rinaldo's contract another two years.

I was in class, then playing the piano, then studying, and now in class again.

I don't at all doubt teams have been using analytics for a long time. It doesn't necessarily follow that all teams are/were using this tool to its fullest extent, though.
- BulliesPhan87

From what Nonis said last summer, the Leafs set aside "significant" money in their budget and listened to analytics proposals over the course of 6 or 7 years and never found a statistical program they felt was good enough to invest in.

He specifically mentioned that they used hard stats like TOI and points because they were more reliable. So, the Leafs were decidedly not an analytical team.

Of course, this is a team that failed to make the playoffs 9 of the last 10 seasons and went on an analytics splurge this summer, hiring known stats advocate Kyle Dubas as assistant GM and also hiring Cam Charron and Darryl Metcalf (who ran extraskater.com) to run their analysis department.

And now, for no reason whatsoever cept it makes me laugh, here is a message from the late, great George Carlin:

The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments in a courthouse: You cannot post "Thou shalt not steal", "Thou shalt not lie", and "Thou shalt not commit adultery" in a building full of lawyers, judges, and politicians. It creates a hostile work environment!

I miss George Carlin

Sorry man, being stuck in class is a crappy way to start your weekend. Hopefully you get to have some fun at some point this weekend!

Thanks for actually reading the blogs. From the 1st paragraph -

Camp will open on Saturday rather than today.

Gonna be a good weekend!!

Playin' a gig in Ventnor tonight
Then off to a good friends bbq tomorrow and,
on Sunday the wife is taking her mother to see Miss America in AC, so I get to drape myself over the couch, crack open a few beers and watch the Eagles game!

Why can't all weekends be like this??

You're conflating stats w/ analytics. They're not synonymous.

Analytics is the process, feeding stats through algorithms and filters to look for trends, patterns and anomalies that can aid/drive sounder decision making. Not the stats themselves.

Yeah, people have been keeping non-standard stats for years. Doesn't mean there was necessarily any actual analytics going on.

- Tomahawk

Semantics. They have certainly evolved over the years. Five years from now, good chance that today's analytics could be archaic. Does that mean that teams aren't using analytics?

All analytics is, is discovering meaningful patterns in data.

There are pills for that. There's also a little thing known as 'beer'.

Sheesh.
