I believe we all know where we all stand on the usage of analytics, so can we talk about something else?

I, for one, believe Umberger is a smart enough hockey player to really help hide Vinny defensively. If Akeson can't cut it and Raffl winds up there, I might think that line could actually break even on the year, maybe finish a slight negative, which is far better than I would project Vinny on any other line

I think if Umberger is healthy, his all around play is going to help the Flyers

I'm gonna miss how he and Hartnell used to go at it every game. There was some serious hate between those two.

I'd like Raffl in top 9 as well. I think a "third" line of Raffl, Vinny and Umberger or Akeson could be solid, and a "fourth" line with Umberger, Laughton and Bellemare could be really capable, but I was going off the lines in the blog.

Funny thing is last year at this time, Nonis was bemoaning that they had an analytics budget and ended up not spending any of it.

This is the stuff that puzzles me. Akeson, who's played all of what, 8 NHL games is a heck of a playmaker! But there is doubts that proven NHL players such as Umberger and 400+ goal scorer Lecavalier are going to help him out much?
- MJL

Akeson has earned his chance in the NHL is all I'm saying as his stats on some horrible Phantom teams prove. He also played great in those eight games in the NHL but he needs to prove he can play in the NHL. Vinny is a shadow of his former self, and R.J. isn't exactly a sniper. If Akeson is to prove he can play in this league playing him with those two seems like setting him up for failure.

What would an analytics budget be used for? Teams can use resources already in place, and use analytics without spending money on it.

Flyers just recently hired Ian Anderson as a manager of hockey analytics. Does that mean that the Flyers haven't used analytics to this point?

Akeson absolutely has earned a chance in the NHL, and the Flyers should give him a good hard look. But again, you're putting Akeson ahead of proven players. Lecavalier was hurt last year, and had a bad year. It remains to be seen if he bounces back. Same for Umberger. Both are proven NHL players. Akeson is not. I want and hope Akeson succeeds and becomes a good player for the Flyers. But in no way would I dismiss Umberger and Lecavalier as players, who are setting up Akeson for failure.

As far as I know, the Flyers haven't made any statements about whether or not they've utilized their analytics budget.

I would agree. My point is that a team doesn't have to spend additional money to use analytics. I believe that teams have been using internal analytics in combination with video to collect data for a number of years. Roger Neilsen was using analytics back in the 70's.

I guess the real question then would be what analytics, specifically are being utilize and how do teams define "analytics" in the first place.

I don't at all doubt teams have been using analytics for a long time. It doesn't necessarily follow that all teams are/were using this tool to its fullest extent, though.

You're conflating stats w/ analytics. They're not synonymous.

Analytics is the process, feeding stats through algorithms and filters to look for trends, patterns and anomalies that can aid/drive sounder decision making. Not the stats themselves.

Yeah, people have been keeping non-standard stats for years. Doesn't mean there was necessarily any actual analytics going on.
