I'll wager $5.00 Radek Martinek is present at camp.

I see a couple of names on the NHL.com UFA list...don't know status, or if they're any good....Alberts, Ranger, Sarich. I know Alberts cracked his egg last year, so he may be unavailable anyway. Again, as Ur Not Me said...we're strictly talking camp invite, here....not signing them to be the second coming of Denis Potvin. Any thoughts? s

see my previous post on the last page re: camp invites and how many defensemen we have in the system. any of those guys is a bottom pairing or scratch at best, which doesn't do anything at all to help us. giving them a camp invite is a waste of time IMO.

I agree, I think we should have as many bodies at camp as we can, and whoever has the best camp makes the team, if its a vet, rookie, prospect or invite.. you win a spot, you play. So invite as many try outs with NHL exp possible.

I get that...but we need another defenseman. I'm going to hope Reinhart is ready, given where/when he was drafted, but we're a couple of injuries away from having either the Carkner/Martinek disaster again, or a deer in the headlights.

Yeah, it doesn't hurt. They won't be taking anyone's ice time during practice, and if one of the guys in question grabs a spot, he'll have earned it. Alberts would be ideal, but I'm afraid his brain is still an omelette at this point.

we don't need another defenseman, we need a TOP 4 defenseman, which is not what we're going to get from a camp tryout vet who hasn't attracted any interest around the league for 3 months.

we either need to trade for a top four defenseman, or hold our breath all season waiting for our defense to get decimated with injuries and free fall in november. No camp tryout is adding anything of value to the defense that we don't already have.

thank you sir, I think what's being misread in my previous posts was that for some reason people seemed to think I was fine with our defense. I'm absolutely not okay with what we have, but adding a scrub who can't get a contract from any other team over the summer isn't going to upgrade our defense. It's like adding another carkner or strait...what's the point.

I still think something shakes loose at the end of camp from a team up against the cap, provided Snow has the ba11s to make the trade. I don't think a top 4 is "sink or swim" necessary (although it sure would be nice), just someone who can play the position would help immensely. Of course, as I also said many times, we probably could live with the young guys IF we had a coach whose only function wasn't to talk sh*t nonsense about battle level while his defensemen collapse in various directions and/or trip over the netminder while retreating.

I don't want a scrub, but I don't think Alberts and Ranger are scrubs, at least not at the Carkner/Strait level. That said, it looks like Ranger went back to Europe (maybe he has a woman there?), and I have to assume Alberts is still in pretty bad shape, or else he probably wouldn't be on that list in the first place.

fully agree with you here, a better coach would be a huge positive.
