Dan.....are they actually going to be able to move the level of seats that HANG OVER the glass in that one corner? The scoreboard blocks views, THE SEATS THEMSELVES block certain sections view...

Is that somehow going to be changed? No. That is my point. HOw is it that in the 2000's you have obstructed view seats for an arena built in the 2000s?

And btw, I don't want a dumpster fire anywhere. I also don't blame Wang for leaving NVMC but I don't think a +20 year lease was needed. Sign one for 5 and tell NVMC and TOH, "rennovate or we won't come back". The idea that the two signed because of Brooklyn, I don't buy. They've never been there and have never seen the arena. Its even more likely Wang asked them to say it in their pressers.

The arena isn't built for hockey and isn't GOOD for hockey. Keep in mind what happened when the Dodgers wanted to build their own stadium on Flatbush Ave. Robert MOses said "no. You will play in Flushing" and they said, "no. we will play in LA. Either way, it isn't in Brooklyn so what does it matter if we go to Flushing or LA." The Dodgers knew their fanbase had moved out to Nassau and Suffolk and they wanted a stadium on a rr line that they could get to easy from the suburbs. Problem is, Barclays is an even longer trip than Flatbush Ave and isn't as safe a trip as it once was. You will have many LIers getting their kids home from games past 11pm and that will get old quick.

Wang kept the team on LI when it easily could have left...good for him. But at some point, that isn't enough to cover for 15 years of CRAP MANAGEMENT. THAT, not the arena, IS THE REASON why no one will sign with the Islanders. In the case of the Russians we just got, we overpaid and over "yeared" both of them and THAT is what we needed to do to sign FA's. Hanging "he kept them on LI" for 15 years doesn't make Wang a hero. In fact, after about 4 years, he became the PROBLEM, not the solution. CHEATING THE SALARY CAP BASEMENT (what else do you call trading for a retired Tim Thomas?), DPs contract when no one wanted to do it...we went from a committee of 4 to a committee of 1 in a month...he turned the team into a laughing stock. That is the reason why we couldn't sign FAs.

This move to Barclays will improve the team's value for the short term (just in time to sell) but long term I'm betting we will have more arena issues.

- islander4cups

there's no chance in hell that wang gets the isles a guaranteed 50 mil per year to play at barclays by trying to sign a 5 year lease. It's been 20 years that the team has needed a new building, and you think having the team leave for 5 is going to get them to do something about it?

the remaining parts of your post is irrelevant.

But they're not moving to LA!! They're moving to Brooklyn. Again if Wang had moved the Isles out of the area the only options for a NHL game would be MSG or Newark. What's worse? Not having them at all or having them in Brooklyn?

And if RAG fans from LI can take their kids to MSG and not worry about what time they get home. Isles fan shouldn't have a problem from Brooklyn.

It will be a problem for ppl taking the train from Brooklyn bc trains stop running after a certain time from the atlantic yard compared to Penn were trains run much later. So if fans are reliant by train, some might have to leave a game earlier than anticipated bc of it. I've done it and its a nuisance for sure....

Unless MTA changes the train schedule in the future, doubt it bc the haven't yet for Nets.

I'd like to see them all put in the cage at once. Then drop the cage in the ocean.

If you are stuck in Uverse hell like me , please take 1 minute to fill this out and request the NHL Network.

They have the NHL Network already in their drop down menu for this survey so hopefully they are close to adding it back on .

1st bold: Why would the Barclays people be interested in only having the Isles for 5 years? Remember, this lease agreement is a two-way street. Both sides need to benefit. For all you know the Barclays' studies could have shown them that they won't begin to turn a profit until well after the first five years of the lease. Remember, the team has been crappy, they are going to be marketing and catering to a new fan base. They're also guaranteeing the Isles $50M per year in revenue, from what i've heard and read. These factors could play a role in profitability for the arena.

2nd bold: Enough bit*hing about Wang. Nobody on this board is proposing the erecting of a statute in Wang's honor for keeping the team in NY. Being appreciative of that fact is not the same as turning a blind eye to over a decade of committing costly mistakes. Nobody on this board will defend Wang's track record as an owner, its indefensible. Just be happy that new minority owners are a vote away from taking a minority interest in the team and are two years away from a majority stake, effectively ending Wang's time as a unilateral decision maker with veto power.

He's been trying to unload this team since the Lighthouse was killed by Kate Murray.

Dan when the Devils moved to Newark, no one complained, why? The Prudential Center was built for hockey...great arena, great site lines, amazing building...the Barclay's has as you noted a scoreboard over the blue line, terrible site lines, and most importantly for a family of 4 costs from LI about $100 to get there. The building wasn't built for hockey, rather b-ball. The building is terrible and the joke of all jokes is that scoreboard...a sophomoric management took the team to a joke of a building. If Wang wasn't such a self center man, manager, owner then possibly the original revised Lighthouse would have received Kate Murray's approval...but it was obvious to all of us, the Wang/Murray battle forced the team to move to this joke of a building.
- bhockey47

This Brooklyn analysis for any true Isles fan should go no further than this question: Do you want the team in NY or in Quebec/Seattle/Kansas City? If your answer is "NY", then Barclays Center was the only option.

By not renewing his lease in the dumpy NVMC (which there was no chance he or any owner of an NHL franchise would do) Wang had to find a new arena. Municipalities aren't lining up to build nine and ten figure sports stadiums. Its not like building a strip mall. Barclays was available and happens to be located in the heart of Brooklyn, opening the franchise up to mass transit and corporate sponsorship dollars it never would have come close to realizing if the team stayed in Nassau. With the loyalty of the current fanbase and the access to millons of people who would never have traveled to NVMC to see the Isles, the organization benefits greatly.

As for the bold-faced part, I am not a Wang supporter. I have been on these boards killing the guy for years. But what's fair is fair. If you want to point the finger of blame at someone for the failure of the Lighthouse, look no further than Kate Murray and the Town of Hempstead politicians. Kate Murray and Kate Murray alone crushed a privately funded development project that would have transformed a 77-acre concrete slab of nothing into a wonderful community gathering point that would have created hundreds of temporary jobs, thousands of permanent jobs, affordable housing and retail competition for the local malls and stores to drive consumer prices for good down a bit. And Kate Murray did it for nothing more than political reasons and to appease the Nimby minority.

Wang is no prince and he wasn't pitching the Lighthouse to be a philantropist. He stood to derive a substantial profit from it and the land was his sole reason for getting involved as an owner of the Isles in the first place. But you can't lay the demise of the Lighthouse at Wang's feet. He pitched a beautiful, privately funded redevelopment plan who's benefits would have far outweighed and outnumbered its negatives. Politicians, most particularly Kate Murray, killed it.

So they should have moved to Kansas City or Quebec or somewhere else. The team would be hundreds or thousands of miles away, but at least there would be no obstructed seats...
