Laughton needs at least 3rd line minutes. I'd rather him play 1st line centre in ahl then waste his talents on the fourth line playing 6 mins a game.
- 28Girouxsalem28

I'm fine with Laughton getting 7-9 minutes on a good 4th line, perhaps with Bellemare and Rinaldo (as long as he plays the way they want him to play). I would also hope that he would see 1-2 minutes on the PK as well.

C'mon, does anybody actually think Sidney "beep boop I am a hockey robot" Crosby could do anything interesting enough to get arrested?

I'd like to see the Flyers 4th line play around 8-10 minutes a game on average. But I'd also like to see them have the ability to play more then that in certain game situations, such as 3rd periods with a 2 goal lead. I'd like to have a 4th line that can be trusted to play in a defensive checking role, rather then having to shorten the bench in that situation.
- MJL

Agreed

If, and it's a big if, Rinaldo can play the way he did for much of the 12-13 season, then a line of Bellemare-Laughton-Rinaldo could be that type of 4th line.

Rinaldo is just so undisciplined. Not only in terms of penalties but in terms of overall play. He takes himself out of position a lot by going for the big hit or simply over committing to one side. I'm just not sure he's capable of being a 10 minute player. Guaranteeing the next 3 years of his contract seems a bit over the top. Schenn and Couts don't even have that kind of guarantee

Randy Jones did not suck, so that is a bad retort on your part. What affected Randy Jones after he signed the contract was a hip injury that he never fully recovered from. Context is always required.

Lots of factors are involved in player contracts. One good reason why Schenn and Couturier may not have that kind of guarantee, is because they were not willing to sign a deal for that length of term, in hopes of improving as a player, and signing a much bigger deal down the line. That's why they call it a bridge contract. Rinaldo is in a different situation.

Yeah, that's actually the bigger thing for me.

His game is so erratic that it just doesn't lend itself to structure right now. He'll go chasing after hits, he'll be too busy jawing or provoking players/officials to join the play, and he'll get antsy and over-pursue when he should just be sitting in a lane, etc.

The PIMs /composure/reputation stuff is bad... but the heart of why he's a terrible hockey player and why he costs the team when he's out there is that lack of structural discipline.

Funny you should say that, as Randy Jones was once a losing contestant on the short-lived gameshow, "Who's Smarter than a Golden Retriever?"

The winning question answered by Molly, the Golden Retriever was "How would you describe sandpaper, to which Molly enthusiastically replied, "Rough!"

For his efforts, Jones was sent home with a bag of Puppy Chow and a flea collar.

They can get by with him on a 4th line playing 10 minutes. But the other two components would need to be very very solid pieces. Not anything we'll have this year I don't think. It seems like the kid gets unearned preferential treatment.

I will now refer to him as golden boy

Playing 10 minutes a night would require putting him on the ice for 2 more minutes than he's averaged his entire career to date. They may try this, but there's been no evidence to suggest it will work.

I agree with you though I wouldn't call him a terrible hockey player. I would call him an easily replaceable player. I believe he can be replaced with a better version as well

Sorry, should have said relatively terrible.

I'm sure he can pull off some nifty puck tricks in practice, and he'd probably put up some serious #'s if he dropped by some summer beer leagues... but as an NHL player, he's well below the replacement level line.

Then I guess the Flyers are that bad we have no option but to play 4th line AHL talent on the big club.....

Well, when the choice for #12F was between Zac, Rosehill, Newbury, VDV or McGinn, is it any wonder that they were one of the more futile teams @ 5V5 in the league?

It just seems strange the team seemed to play hardball with Schenn during negotiations and traded Hartnell partially because of undisciplined play, but there is Rinaldo being handed a 2 year extension when he didn't even ask for it.

My belief on 'energy players' is that you're better off getting one once they're developed and once they have a better understanding of their role. Going through the growing pains of developing a 4th line energy player just doesn't seem worth it when you can pay $300k more for an established player.

Maybe. I think the 4th line had little to do with that. The Schenn-Simmonds line though. God awful 5v5. They play way more mins and cant even generate a good forecheck most of the time.

Rosehill-Lecavalier-Rinaldo

What do you guys think??
