Actually Carcillo is a markedly better player than Rinaldo. He's had two double digit goal season in the NHL.

The only level Rinaldo scored more than 9 goals at was junior, when he had 10

He was amazing for us down the stretch. Gave us the energy and edge we lacked all year long. Don't want him back though.

Scored double the goals of Rinaldo in ten fewer games. Hardly a good player, still better than Rinaldo.

As for the future, I have doubts Rinaldo will ever be as good as Carcillo was at one point

You may be right.. but you are looking at goals and assists for evaluating a 4th line player which is silly IMO. Rinaldo already is a better skater, hitter and fighter than Carcillo ever was. Rinaldo is still young enough he could improve his defensive game. Seems the kid is eager to learn too.

We could always put Vinny on the 4th line and he'll score 20 goals and we'll have the best 4th line player in the league that doesn't provide what a 4th line player needs to provide.

The other two incidents from last season that stood out to me were:

1) Rinaldo taking a completely unnecessary high sticking penalty at the end of the 2nd period against Phoenix in October. The Coyotes scored the game winning goal 13 seconds later.

http://flyers.nhl.com/gam...er/en/recap?id=2013020058

2) Rinaldo being goaded by Roussel into giving up a seven minute powerplay not even two minutes into the game against Dallas in December. The Flyers killed it off, but were out of energy in the second and third periods and got blown out. How short must Rinaldo's fuse be if he can totally lose his poop that early in a game against a Western team?

Yes, this! I remember both of these. I almost turned off the game against DAL because I thought it was over before it began. This was actually the start to my anti-Rinaldo feelings. A 4th liner can absolutely NOT cost you 2 points in todays competitive NHL (let alone 4 as you have shown here!). The standings are too close for that type of player/liability. And they gave him a raise and extended him early! WTF?!

Edit: Again the sky is not falling but strike two for Hexy in my opinion. Lack of value on the Hartnell trade was strike one.

If Hartnell's propensity for taking penalties every bothered you, keep this in mind. He took 33 minors in 1,316:43 of ice time last season, or a minor every 39:54 minutes.

Rinaldo took 29 minors in 515:44 of ice time, or a minor every 17:47 minutes. So Rinaldo took minor penalties at more than double the rate Hartnell did.

Remember Steve Downie? He was kinda like Rinaldo in being a hot head. Downie calmed down and found a way to contribute other than giving suspension worthy hits.

Great, I hope that happens. And when/if it does- that is when you sign him to an extension. NOT NOW!

You're living in the past imo. 4th line in the nhl isn't what it used to be.

Its only 700K. Relax. He's really not that bad of a 4th liner that only plays an average of 7-8 min.

850k and if you had better reader comprehension you would see the words 'the sky is not falling.' And as for the only playing 7-8 minutes? That is part of the problem, take off the orange and black glasses bro.

Rinaldo, outside if hitting, brings nothing either. He's bad defensively, doesn't produce offense, takes penalties & lacks hockey sense. Even if he is eager to learn, it's either no sinking in or he's not able to put what he learned into practice.

He's 24, shown little improvement in terms of anything besides one half season where he was effective at drawing penalties and is a liability more than an asset.

No, NHL is still the NHL and you have lines that have certain roles.

Scoring line 1
Scoring line 2
Checking line 3
Checking line 4

Its a bonus to be able to role a 4th line like what Boston has had over the last few seasons or to put Mike Richards on the 4th line. Which Richards is nothing more than a defensive checking forward at this stage of his career anyways.

I disagree. It seems like more and more teams have a line 1, line 2, line 2B, line 3 as their 4 lines. The 4th line nowadays is a defensively responsible line and there might be a checking player like a dorsett or a glass on it to provide an edge and energy, theres no goons like rinaldo, rupp, shelley, etc.

Theres a reason carcillo is out of a job despite being so effective in the playoffs.

Rinaldo is never going to have the kind of playmaking skill Downie had. Downie scored 237 points in 194 games in Junior, and has a career NHL PPG of 0.48.

You might be right. Dont mistaken me for saying Rinaldo is the next Laperriere. I am just saying he's a decent 4th line guy. He isnt great, he isnt horrible either. We could have better. I agree with that.

Personally I would rather they play a 4th line of

Raffl-Laughton-Bellemare. Hows that for defense and mild skill?

Good teams certainly do. Teams like LA, Chicago and Boston recognize that a good fourth line provides a coach with options, gives good players a rest without hurting the team and have three guys that can help in other areas

The trouble is, Rinaldo is a bad 4th liner. He's not good defensively, he's not able to produce offense, he can't effectively kill penalties, he can't play effectively for 8-10 minutes a night like a decent 4th liner.

Yes, Raffl-Laughton-Bellemare would be an ideal 4th line for a good team
