We already have a #7. If a dman is traded, Schultz is still probably the #7 with a guy like Lauridsen/Alt in the top-6 (depending on who went).
- jmatchett383

I think that Schultz is probably still better than Lauridsen, although the Flyers would probably prefer the younger guy play more minutes.

I don't see much future for Lauridsen in Philly. After playing in the AHL this season for a healthy $600K I think he may well head elsewhere.

I agree. I don't think he's much more than a cheap spare part, be it here or elsewhere.

Still has good size and works hard, not afraid of the physical side of things...guys like that still get jobs around the NHL

I think Mason will be fine. The thing I look for not only in Mason but other goalies is can they step their game up when the post season arrives. All be it a small sample size, I think Mason did a good job and I am confident the goal tending woes have gone away.

It's an 82 game season, so every goalie whether good or bad will have great games, ok games, and games where they get absolutely shelled and have to get pulled. I just hope this organization doesn't over react if their is a bad stretch throughout the season with Mason. He's a legit #1 starter in this league.

The start of the schedule is really tough so going 4-4-2 in October would not be an awful start. Even though .500 in hockey is below the median.

It's possible, given the difficulty of their early schedule, that will get off to a poor start.

Could happen. October looks pretty daunting.

I do know this, if it is a poor start I won't write em off like I did last season.

Sure, we play against good teams. We also play better against top competition. The boys wake up for those games.

If we could only play the Pens 82 games a season...

OTOH, the Flyers did very well during a brutally difficult stretch of consecutive games down the stretch last season. Also, sometimes the best time to catch a top opponent is early in the season before they really get rolling.

On paper, though, the Flyers' October schedule is a really tough and unforgiving slate.

Im with you on this Bill. This is the best time to play these teams. I think we'll be fine.

Oh yeah, they can certainly have a good start, despite the difficulty.

They're not an awful team, they're just probably one of a big group of teams that will be battling for the playoffs up to game 82.

On the contrary, I thought Mason only rarely had to rely on "lucky saves" last season. His mechanics were excellent most of the season. When he did have rely on his athleticism, he got over quickly and took away a lot of net.
- bmeltzer

I have the up most respect for Mason the player and his ability. He needed a fresh start and really took advantage. At the same time, he wasn't very good for about 4 or 5 seasons and has finally come off a really good one. He's going to have to do it again. With this said, I don't view Mason the same way Jeremy Roenick does. Steve Mason is one of the bright spots of this team. I believe he's a capable starter. I just don't think he's a top 15 goalie in the league and I don't think he's nearly as valuable to this team as Giroux is.

I think our start will depend on Giroux's start and how improved our team defense is. So much was made about Umberger's speed, discipline and his more balanced all around game but then we lost Timonen and replaced him with Del Zotto. It's really hard to say. I feel a lot of teams within our division have greatly improved.

I actually remember a small stretch where Rinaldo was probably considered by many our best player early during the half season. The only one who showed a emotion and looked like he cared.

I'm not making an excuse for the guy, he's pretty much has shown very little growth since his rookie year.

This extension is the worst thing Hextall has done so far. Why not let Rinaldo get thru this season before resigning him?

He's unskilled, undisciplined and I would have no place for him on my roster if I was a GM or coach. Even a guy like Carcillo had the skill to score 13 goals. Rinaldo doesn't even have that.
