You dont see a risk in trading for any of those other players? Also, what notion do you have on the direction those clubs will be going in in 2 years? - Jeropotato
A lot of them are useful players.
And a lot can happen in two years, but its not very often teams try to disenfranchise their franchise players in that time span. Vancouver and Philly are not the norm. |

You say that like it's a bad thing. Visiting the other threads is a lot of fun. Especially when Nugeishuge, Horseguts, HB77, MaximumBone are there for a full assault and Yeti is running block. - Jeropotato

Really? I disagree. Most of those contracts were before the lock out, and I see more than a few teams using this as a way to get out of them. Zetterberg is on the decline now, who else will want him for his final 7 years?
Besides....when in the History of the NHL have all thse long term contracts stuck to old players been the norm? |

Detroit has too much pride for that, and I also can't see them hanging out a lifer like that. Same with some of those others.
Doesn't mean it is the smart thing, but a lot of these teams seem to make the "emotional" choice over the smart one when it comes to "their own" |

Yeah but like I said in my edit, when have ever seen so many long ass contracts as we have now? I wondered often what these teams would do when they had these players way past their primes on the ass end of their deals. |

I think the issue with some, like Hossa or Luongo, isn't that bad really.
Doing some mental math here, if the cap rises at about 5%, which is probably a little conservative, especially if expansion increases revenues, the cap will be ~90 mill come 2019. I think a lot of teams wouldn't have an issue with Hossa playing the 4th line at 5 mil when its only 5% of the cap.
I mean, we have 3-4 million dollar 4th liners now. That's 5-6% of the cap. |

The long ass contracts became a thing with the salary cap. Teams needed to try to get reduced aav. |

What if the cap is only 71 or 72 million in 2017? Let's face it, there will be teams looking to dump contracts if they are tight against the cap. Also, and its different for every player, a lot of these guys will play out their contract if they are playing a big role on an expansion as opposed to 10 minutes a night as a 4th liner, and that might help with those pesky cap recapture penalties. |

I was wondering about how much money the lockout cost Sidney Crosby.
Like, if there wasn't a cap and salaries for stars didn't deflate like they did post-lockout for a few years, I figure the Pen's would be paying close to 16-18 million for him annually.
Guys like Forsberg and Kariya were making like 9 in 2004 before the rollback and then a market deflation of like another 20 percent. |

Sidney Crosby should be making 3 times what Bobby Holik made in his career. I bet he's only just caught up to him by now. |

It isn't going to only increase by 2 mil in the next 3 years. Also, the new CBA says that the cap can never decrease from the previous year, effective this season.
The new Canadian TV deal will almost single handedly contribute to a 4% jump.
Also, no teams are decreasing their ticket prices, which also increases revenues. Teams will be releasing new sweaters. New arenas will be increasing revenues. 2 new franchises would be like, at least, 300mil in basic revenue a season. If 2 poop tier franchises get their move on to better markets, there'll be an increase there too.
Online media is also something the NHL is getting better at distributing, and that's only going to grow. Playoff revenues grow every year.
The only economic threat is if the Canadian dollar drops to about 85 cents US. Even at about 91-ish its not that bad for the league.
And I think a lot of those guys would retire rather than spend their last days slugging it out for last place on an expansion club, even if their current team was crap. Crap you know versus crap you don't. |

Boyd Gordon. Chris Kelly.
The Caps have a 5.5 million dollar 6th defenceman. The Panther's have a brand new 5.5mil 4th line centre. The Flames will be paying 7+ mil this season for their 3rd pair. You've got some well paid dudes in New Jersey playing bottom roster spots. Brian Bickell is a 4th liner. Horcoff and Gonchar are making 5+ each to play 4th line/3rd pair. Mike Richards makes 5.25 to be a 4th liner. The Preds have a handful of 4th liners making 3ish.
etc. |
