fly off the handle
-An Americanism that goes back to our pioneer days when axes were most often handmade, frontiersman whittling their own handles and attaching ax-heads that had been shipped from the industrialized East coast. Because they were often crudely fitted together, ax-heads were known to fly off the handle while being used, often resulting in injuries to the user or those near-by. The suddenness of an ax-head being flung off - and the resulting trouble it caused - naturally suggests a sudden, wild outburst of anger, the loss of self-control, or losing one's cool, all with a possible threat of harm. The expression is first recorded in John Neal's 1825 novel Brother Jonathan; or the New Englanders as off the handle. It was not recorded in its modern form, fly off the handle, until 1844 when it was used in one of the Canadian Thomas Haliburton's Sam Slick tales. The character of Sam Slick is a Yankee who expressed his often satirical views of human nature and national relations in a newspaper column in the Novascotian. - laughs2907
I actually found this post quite interesting, good work. You know the Term "Son of a Gun"? It actually dates back several hundred years . It was common practice for the British Navy to simply patrol the waters surrounding the Islands. Being, well, British, there was never a shortage of of enemies that could invade at basically any time in history. Anyway, the average Navy ship had a large number of soldiers on these ships, they didn't have any actual jobs that had to do with piloting the vessel, they were just soldiers, known in slang as "Guns". So these ships would port in some fishing town to let the "guns" let off some steam, and it was not uncommon for them to bed down with a sultry young Bar-Maid or Merchant's daughter and be gone by way of sea without even knowing they got the gal pregnant. The Bastard child would forever be known by the townsfolk as that "Son of a Gun".

No I'm just excited for the Royal Rumble that's gonna take place on this thread. West is pretty obvious, but it seems everyone in the East thinks their team is gonna make it. I even heard some Buffalo fans say that they think they have a shot. There isn't that wide a margin between the 5th best and 3rd worse, mind you. This will be Ek's hit machine tho, so I imagine he's saving it. |

i dont see how toronto can give up a top pairing Dman, why would they be interested when they are a top contender in the east? dallas will have better luck with the bottom feeders such as florida, ottawa and buffalo. or if they can find a deal in the west with a lottery team such as edmonton, vancouver etc. - sensnucksnocups
True we all have them pencilled in at # 2

Not to sh!t on a city, because it might be great to live there, but I have visited Toronto a couple of times, and the Downtown core is boring as fck. As far as being a tourist or whatever, my favorite NA cities are 1.Boston, 2.Vancouver 3.Seattle. Having said that I haven't even been to NY, Montreal or Chicago. I've been to more Cities in Europe than in the states, and by far the greatest city I ever had the pleasure of visiting is Berlin. Now that town is fcking awesome!
