My goodness, what was Bill thinking? Of course the blogs of August should be about the current squad so that the out-of-towners will feel included and can harp on things that have already been discussed ad infinitum.

I suppose the subjects of future blogs shouldn't include the Stanley Cup teams, since the majority of posters here never saw them? We wouldn't want you to feel that you couldn't 'relate'.

- tangent_man

Yea, I think all aspects of the current team have pretty much been discussed more than needed. Until the roster changes or training camp starts, it'll all just be rehashing old debates. Every possible facet of the team has been discussed at LEAST 298 times since the end of the playoffs

I don't mind Simmonds and Schenn together. They've seen a lot of time together since coming over from LA. They know each other, they seem to really like each other. My only issue there is, it doesn't matter who they play with, they're poor defensively. Lecavalier seems to take the brunt of the blame for a line being bad defensively but Briere was just as bad. I like a line of Schenn, Simmonds and Lecavalier/Briere offensively but collectly they are a disaster defensively.

I think it makes sense to keep Giroux and Voracek together. They are easily our two most skilled forwards. Great hands, good skaters, they're both the total package outside of the fact neither are shooters. For the reason alone is why I'd consider something different. Simmonds is the new Knuble or Hartnell now. I wouldn't underrated what Simmonds could bring to playing with Giroux or Schenn for this matter. I wouldn't glue Giroux and Voracek just yet.

Keeping pairs together does make sense. Giroux-Voracek, Schenn-Simmonds, Couturier-Read are pairs to be proud of. I just wonder if the Flyers should continue to force one idea. Each pair has at least one flaw.

The thing with Briere was he always set up deep in the O zone so was never the first forward back and the wing had to cover the C duties. When he had a guy like Hecht in BUF or Leino here who could do that, he was a much better player. Kurri did a lot of the same for Gretzky.

I agree about Schenn and Simmonds in their own end but Schenn has played some center so if he's first man back, that's his duty. A few guys may get a shot at No. 2 center. Vinny, Raffl, Laughlin. Maybe it's Schenn after all. There are some wild cards in there and some opportunities. No. 2 center is a big hole, it's really the biggest on the team right now.

Now in camp, I might be tempted to play Read with Giroux and Voracek and put Couturier between Schenn and Simmonds and tell the other forwards, "Here's your shot."

I don't mean to come off as disrespectful but I'm not a local guy (as some of us aren't) so I guess it would be easier for me to relate topics like, debates related to the team. I think we've best Brayden Schenn at center or wing has been beaten to death. What about whether or not Voracek and Giroux should be split. Line combos change all the time but those two are the players who seem to remain the same.

Your guess is as good as any. We just can't ignore how large a role Lecavalier and Umberger will play.

thanks for this post, bill. always enjoy walks down memory lane and back stories.

i've probably told the story in here about my first attempt at visiting pelle's grave in the fall of 1993, while i was an exchange student at stockholms universitet, but i'll share it briefly again: basically, i got lost inside the huge cemetery, hopped on a backhoe from a grave digger who drove me to the section, and still couldn't find the stone before daylight ran out on me. i was literally on my hands and knees crawling around in the dark trying to find it. finally, i gave up, and fortunately for me, was able to exit the cemetery by scaling the perimeter wall which was on the edge of pelle's section, and got out to the street. i returned the next day, bright and early and was able to quickly find it this time. i visited again in the spring of 95, which unfortunately has been my most recent trip to stockholm.

here's a picture i took on the november morning i discovered it for the first time, a cold and icy day, a very emotional one at that. rip, pelle.

Not from what area? In today's blog, one is in S. Jersey, one is in Montreal, the other is in Stockholm. Talked about Flin Flon, Manitoba in the Clarke blog. Point being: there are places of Flyers significance to visit in many different locales.

As for topics related to the current team, I certainly cover those, too. The Flyers off season has been ongoing since Mayband there is nearly another month until training camp even officially starts. Six plus weeks til the regular season opener.

There is a Flyers blog here each and every day. Any and all important current topics will get covered. As for blogs in August, when there's very little going on, I mix up the topics and work in a lot of team history related stuff.

Thanks for sharing Hammar. Beautiful picture.

I can't imagine this happening. At the time, Pelle was pretty highly regarded in Philly at that time wasn't he?

Unimaginable. There's no way for me to even comprehend it.

It's chilling and beautiful to hear you guys reminisce about Pelle- what you were doing that day and all that kind of stuff....it's the best I can do to actually empathizing.

yw. a bit of a surreal experience.

highly regarded is an understatement. he was on the verge of being the new bernie...he just didn't seal the deal in the final the summer before, through no fault of his own (which (frank)face local beat"writer" marcus hayes vehemently disagrees with).

we were at the flyers home game on sat night and Pelle did not get the start and heard about it sunday morning and we had season tix for the Eagles and you could hear a pin drop it was so sad and people were crying at the Eagles game. I was in a state of shock and we just stood on the ramp at the vet looking at the spectrum and it took a longtime to get over this...thank God for Hexy
