It reminds me of the typical response in political discussions: "Why do you hate America?"

The problem with this region is that the standard has been so low for so long that merely moving in the direction of closing the gap between us and other cities in the nation as far as amenities, business, etc. is concerned, is often considered monumental. , where in other places, even something like HARBORCENTER is merely considered "a typical Tuesday".

Why has someone of your extraordinary intellect and capabilities gotten left behind in someplace that is so far behind in the gap?

I loved living in Buffalo and went back for a couple of years. For me too excel in life like I personally wanted to, I had to leave. I miss the people, food, and sense of community that a region like Western New York is top-notch at. However, my life goals could not be met as easily in a place like Buffalo. Plus the winters are rough. I still love coming home and visiting, showing those in my life who have never experienced a city of people who genuinely care for those around them. But at the end of the day, Buffalo cannot offer me what I need in my life right now.

When Buffalo gets the thriving business community and revitalization we all see happening, then there is a better chance that I will come back, however the weather is still a huge detriment for me.

I may be facing that decision in a year or two. Thing is, for as "negative" as I talk about Buffalo and the city, when I get asked the question "then why don't you leave?", the answer is, I might have to, and I very well may soon out of necessity. But I don't want to. I don't want to move to achieve something great, when Buffalo is capable of achieving it on its own, with a little more initiative and a high standard demanded by its citizens. I don't want to move to a great city. I want Buffalo to be that great city.

Part of my personal goals were in the music industry, coupled with professional goals. It's hard to be in a band in Buffalo that isn't a bar band. I did enjoy playing in a bar band there and the money was great, but I like to play my own music and see what opportunities may arise.

I do know there have been many successful musicians to come out of Buffalo, but the market is thin. It was one of those decisions that I didn't want to make, but had to. Much like your decision that you're facing. Buffalo is on the upswing, and in the last four years since I have been gone there have been amazing changes. The future is bright for Buffalo and it always holds a great place in my heart.

That's nothing new. There are numerous athletes that have come through here and remarked at the same thing. It's great. It's what allowed me to buy a house at age 24.

However, the low real estate costs and costs of living in general are usually signs of poor economic conditions in the region. If this city's economy ever does really pick up to the point that it's noticed on a national scale, those real estate costs will increase, and it won't be so cheap to live here anymore.

Wow . A person that can find a negative in anything ! When they do win the cup . You will have a problem with them winning it on the road . Or have a major beef with the parade route.

Where else in the league is there a facility like the Harbor Center right next to the NHL arena? I have been in every major arena in the world . Multiple times . I have not seen it.

The projects that the Pegula's are doing are second to none. The renderings and the process that has been shown on here are incredible. I think it will be the new benchmark that other organizations will strive for.

Makes total sense . For most careers you have to leave most places you are at some point to spread your wings and broaden your horizons . Buffalo is not the first place I have called home. When I decided to retire from the Music Industry and start my company I could have settled for good anywhere . I choose Buffalo even with a rather extensive knowledge of all the alternatives. My partner is in Los Angeles and continually bugged me to move there. He did not get it till he came here last year. Stayed with me for a week while we had meetings with our new manufacturing facility just outside Rochester and with parties in Toronto .

After being here for a week he admitted to me , you are right this place is special and I get why you choose to settle here now. By the way he has been around extensively as well. Whenever a friend comes through with an act at the First Niagara center and they have a day off . I show them around . They end up apologizing to me for busting my chops all those years I was in the entertainment Industry for making Buffalo my home base.

I just get a little upset when people don't realize this is a pretty good place . Sure there is lots of room for improvement . But I see things happening . It seems the worst bashers of Buffalo are people that are here . And they do not learn to appreciate till after they are gone..

Sorry for the rant.

I defend Buffalo until I am blue in the face. I love having the ability to show people around when I have them come back with me. It's a special place, that I will always call home.

A building like Haborcenter? Next to an NHL arena? None. You're right. It's nothing like anything ever built before. However, I'm talking about innovative projects as a whole. I'm talking about how they rarely happen here. I'm talking about how it took a billionaire, willing and able to throw money around like it was candy in order to get this done, and not overly concerned about turning a profit. That's all well and good. However, in order for Buffalo to really turn around economically, it needs several more projects like HarborCenter. Unfortunately, the political and economic climate here is still not favorable for it. HarborCenter is a good start, but unfortunately, we have a "look what we're doing" attitude, resting on some brief laurels, instead of looking for the next project. That's how the "big" cities got it done.

The tired old parade argument (that has never occurred) aside, am I wrong here? If Buffalo has the great turnaround we all hope, the values and costs of properties will go up. That's just basic economics. If using common sense is being negative, then I wear you're comment like a badge of honor.

That's just it . You need to believe at times even when it is against the odds . I just see a lot of things going in the right direction . You are just too quick too dismiss all the possible scenarios with your common sense. You are not as worldly as you would like to believe at times . Many great cities have come back and been revived.

At least it will allow people to turn a profit on the properties they possibly own.

That should be the goal of any property owner.

Exactly. So in order for property values to rise, we need the economic atmosphere to improve, greatly. Low property values can benefit individuals looking to buy, but overall, for the good of a region as a whole, that's not a good thing. We should want our property values to be higher. Or am I just being "negative"?

I would love for property values to be higher there, but you're right. It's not there now. It's possibly on the right track, but there needs to be more industry downtown. As soon as these projects are done, the community should grow. That would be ideal.
