If Thornton comes to Edmonton, leads the team to the playoffs, then barfs all over himself in the postseason (again) I'll be certain the hockey gods have it in for me. Here's a stat for those who feel Thornton can do no wrong:

We need to take the next step. We won't need to rely on Joe in the playoffs, it will be relying on Hall. We just need Joe's help to get there. He will also be vital in helping Yakupov get the confidence up. He turned Cheechoo, Seto, even Hertl into goal scorers (not saying Hertl isn't capable on his own - still young)

Edit: it will also help in easing Draisaitl into the league by sheltering him.

Joe Thornton would be an excellent acquisition.
