Why would a team trade an already proven elite defenseman who is a top 10 defender in the league for an unproven 1st round pick? The 1st rounder would be lucky to have a ceiling as high as McDonagh's let alone come close to reaching it.

For sure. At the same time, I really don't know if the Rangers do it. From a value standpoint, obviously it makes some sense. But when looking at what the Rangers are trying to do, their window is the next 2 years with MSL and Dan Boyle close to retiring and Lunqvist having only a few more years before he starts to decline.

Would it make sense for them to trade 2 in-their-prime players for a prospect?

Tough call if that deal was on the table for Sather...imagine if he went through with it and McDavid turned out to be a bust? Or imagine Sather passes on the deal and then 10 years from now after MSL, Dan Boyle, and Hank are all retired, McDavid is turning 28 and is the hands-down best player in the league...

He isnt waiving. This is just window dressing. They'll still be a dominant team this season. LA was (frank)ing lucky to take them out.

I wouldn't call it an Oiler Rule. Everybody forgets about Pittsburgh tanking also for so many seasons, just never winning to move up one season (like Edm did).

People keep forgetting about that because it actually worked for that team. But you also had a player that was spoken about since he was 11yrs old as being the next great one (Crosby). Hockey since then has changed so much on a scope and with all the talent without winning to potential US markets. You think the NHL is not going to step in? They will do whatever it takes to try and get more stars down south as the market north of the border will never die.

No. K-Lowe fixed so much organational issues in the last 4 years while Tambo kept collecting 1st overall picks and little else. The Anti-Lowe talk is shallow and stupid. not to mention pointless seeing as how it's MacTavish's team.

The pens sucked for years. They did suck during the Crosby draft having picked 5th then 1st then 2nd prior to that draft. They along with 3 other teams had the most balls in the lotto. They also got the 2nd overall pick the year later....
