it amazes me that guys like rinaldo find nhl jobs even if for only a few years, and that some other more responsible, 2-way players, who can skate, hit a bit, even with stone hands can't crack a lineup.

Agreed. You can find guys who can hit and play hockey, and most of them cost just a little bit more than Rinaldo

Yeah, Sutter is definitely as close to an idiot savant as you can get in hockey. We'll see if Berube follows along that vein, or is just minus the savant part.

Seems like they're trying so hard to shape Zac into a Cal Clutterbuck, but of course the key difference is that Clutterbuck actually has talent (he didn't slow Tavares down in junior, for example).

They should shape him into a Phantom or Predator or Shark...yeah, San Jose is loading up on goon fourth liners

I still think Steve Ott would have been a really good fit here. Heck, I would have traded Zac Rinaldo just for Ott's rights. Sure Ott doesn't bring the offense the price tag might suggest but he can play anywhere within the bottom six (center or wing), decent faceoff man, kills penalties and probably the best in the business at getting top players off their games.

This obviously doesn't matter anymore, so let's get into what does.

We lose Hartnell for Umberger. We lose Timonen for Del Zotto. Regardless of whether or not Laughton can win the fourth line center role or White starts the season there, I worry about our fourth line. I can see a collective lack of confidence in Rinaldo or Rosehill. Bellemare is still a bit of a question mark as far as what we has to offer on this team and in the NHL. Some project Raffl as a fourth liner but I think Berube has him penciled in as a possible two way scorer.

So are we a better team heading into this season the last season or not?

Honestly, about the same. They'll miss Hartnell's offense and Timonen's savvy, but benefit from Umberger's disciplined play and versatility and Del Zotto's speed.

The 4th line will take care of itself. I'd rather see guys like Bellemare and Laughton over a goon line. I see zero need for Rinaldo or Rosehill. You can find physicality that is cheaper and more disciplined and who can play for just a little bit more money.

The Flyers have enough bodies where they can ice a half decent fourth line, or they can continue to pretend Rinaldo is a NHL caliber guy.

The keys will be the development of Couturier & Brayden Schenn, a stronger commitment to two way play and doing a better job of controlling play at 5 on 5.

I think where the Flyers troubles might lie this year is, that other divisional teams may have improved enough to push them out of the playoffs.
