Not really, I couldn't stand those mid 80s Oilers teams. Just can't get over 85 and 87!
- BiggE

interesting in that he turned to puck over on daigneault's winning goal in game 6, but made up for it with the cup winning goal in game 7 in the 2nd period off the far post on a feed from gretzky in the corner after jsaq's favorite dman crossman turned the puck over in a reverse clearing attempt.

run on sentence.

87 was tough. They could have won that series against a Hall of Fame stacked Oilers roster. Flyers were depleted. No Kerr really hurt.

Carlton Fisk says of the 75 World Series, 'We won that series 3 games to 4." Kinda feel the same way about the 87' SCF.

The 85 series wasn't very competitive.

- PLindbergh31

i disagree. the games were fairly close, except for the last one, in which the oilers blew them out with froese in net. also had an unfair advantage with the 2-3-2 format, and plenty of flyers being injured or playing injured, including kerr. game 2 was an empty net goal win, game 4 was a one goal game, basically all gretzky, and game 5 they blew a 3-1 lead and lost 5-3.

the 87 series was closer, for sure, though.

True. The first 4 games were competitive. Game 5 was a joke. Still when you lose a series in 5 it's not exactly a white knuckler. Point taken though... Crippled by injuries in 85 as well. Surely just bad luck/coincidence.

A healthy Tim Kerr may well have been a huge difference maker in that series. While Fuhr was always good in the playoffs, Hextall clearly outplayed him and with Kerr in the lineup, well, who knows...

If I remember correctly, wasn't it the '85 Finals where Dave Poulin either didn't play or was held together with duct tape because of his ribs? Might've been '87, because, as others have noted, both of those Flyers teams were practically MASH units by the time the Finals rolled around.

Yup, no McCrimmon and I belive that Howe and Kerr, along with Poulin either missed games or played with significant injuries. And, of course, the loss of Lindbergh for game 5 was huge, Froese was ice cold.

Yeah Poulin played through some nasty injuries in both 85 and 87. He was a warrior, much like Timonen today.

Bruce Cowick.

Gets his name engraved on the Cup before playing a regular season game.

I wondered how many other players can say the same thing. Esa Tikanen immediately comes to mind.

Not sure on Ken Morrow. I believe he played a few regular season games in March before the playoffs, but man what a run he had! A gold medal followed by 4 straight cups, JFC!!

Froese got lit up. If memory serves me correctly didn't Gretzky have a hat trick in the first period of game 3?

Not sure, but I do remember him all but singlehandedly beating the Flyers in either game 3 or 4.

I'm pretty sure it was game 3. I'm almost certain he scored 2 goals in the first minute, then finished off the hat trick later in the period. It was almost 30 years ago so I could be wrong.

"Gretzky single-handedly won the game for his club. He scored twice within the first 90 seconds of the game, and finished off a hat trick by the end of the first period. Although the Oilers put six shots on net over the final 40 minutes, it was enough to escape with a 4–3 win and 2–1 series lead."

Do you think we'll ever look back at this era Chicago team in light similar to the Oilers or early 90s Penguins teams? I mean, player for player, you're looking at:

Toews - probably the #1 captain in hockey right now
Kane - one of the best goal scorers in hockey...maybe the best.
Hossa - amazing superstar, great 2-way ability
Sharp - good for 30/40/70 ever year.
Keith - a few Norris Trophies, spectacular all-around defender
Seabrook - plays second fiddle to Keith, but it a legit #1 on most teams
Crawford - has matured into a legit top-10 goalie in the league, and is (for the most part) good enough to get the job done given the parts in front of him.

Obviously they don't have a forward group full of HOFers and 500+ goals scorers (and a 498 goal scorer). But they do have a number of legit superstars and are maybe a more solid team that the Edmonton or 90s Pittsburgh teams.

I think the only team that's come anywhere close to those Oilers teams was the '95 Wings -- but of course they fell short that year:
