Crosby is the best player currently. But he would be a distant 3rd to them in terms of scoring.
- jmatchett383

Crosby isnt even better than Sakic. IMO.

It's certainly an interesting debate. I believe they would still put up more points than anyone in the league today, but some of the records Gretzky has like most goals in a season and assists in a season would not be the same in today's game. Just my opinion
- Streit2ThePoint

The magnitude may be lower, but they'd still dominate.

Hell yes he is.

Look, I like the players from the 80s, but you have to compare players to their competition in the years they actually played.

The numbers today may be lower, but the proportional gap between Crosby and the rest of the league is, I'd argue, similar.

You think so? It'd be interesting what fan reaction would be like, if their favorite team's goalie came in with, say, a 2.94 GAA and .899 SVPCT for an entire season.

I say that because fans are so used to not seeing a ton of goals, every goal scored, especially weaker ones, are analyzed to the Nth degree.

If we got back to the early-to-mid 90s, where 6-10 guys were pumping in 55-65 goals and 12-15 guys were topping 100 points, with corresponding scoring increases throughout rosters...man.

Some people would lose their poop, considering the types of goals that would be going in.

- AllInForFlyers

Lol, don't think it'll reach the level of the '80's, but there are certainly trends that point toward an eventual tipping point down the road:

- continued flushing out of unskilled players/roles (enforcers, Doug Murrays, etc),
- avg skill level of incoming kids seems to keep increasing (esp. dmen),
- goaltending technique/technology will eventually plateau,
- league-wide tactical move toward more puck possession,
- tracking tech will help expose weaknesses in def. systems/lineups with greater precision,
- continued league interest in tinkering w/ the rules.

I'm more of a 90's guy myself. It seemed like each team had at least a dynamic duo, a number 1 defenseman and a top goalie. Finding the support seemed more complicated then finding stars.

Lindros, LeClair, Desjardins, Hextall

Sakic Forsberg, Foote, Roy

Yzerman, Shanahan, Lidstrom, Vernon

Messier, Graves, Leectch, Ritcher

Roenick, Amonte, Chelios, Belfour

etc

my cousin died of ALS a few years ago so I've been donating for a while. The ice bucket challenge has brought tremendous awareness. They've raised 5 times what they normally raise

I view it like wearing pink for breast cancer awareness. Sure, people just wear pink clothing, but it raises awareness which in turn does bring in donations.

Can you define what you mean by and how you're judging this? Is this best post-Flyers career, or best guys who were at one point Flyers but we're judging their careers both with and apart from the Flyers?

Yeah. It's awful. My cousin is actually my dads cousin but he was in his 30s. When my parents first got married they lived down the street from him. They basically helped raise him. My mom was inconsolable when she got the news. He had a wife and two young daughters.

Solid list as always Big E. I disagree with Dave Brown as best fighter. It's clearly Jody Shelley. Not even debatable.

Agreed, with the advent of advancd stats and even more focus put on possession, I'd argue we're more likely to see lower scores rather than higher ones.
