Rozsival to the Panthers for a 7th. |

teams are gonna know that chicago is gonna have to trade someone... even if you try to do a bargaining war chicago isnt going to get equal value. oduya? a second round pick alone would be a dream come true. leddy for martin straight up might have to be acceptable. |

Hawks would keep Oduya if they were only getting a second. Oduya on most teams is a 2nd defenseman on first pair or 2nd pairing defensemen. Worth way more than a second round
Also once the season is underway teams are going to be calling about Oduya becaus they want to win now, unlike right now where its all about the future. Gotta wait for the mindset shift |

ok then how do you get under the cap? and oduya isnt a top pairing guy on any team. he would be second pairing on many teams but the hawks have no strength in their bargaining position |

Leddy and Versteeg packaged to the Sens for forward prospect Stefan Noesen and 2nd or 3rd round pick.
Would love it to be more of a return but teams know the Hawks are up against it. |

That's so much for the Sens to give up for two players in their 30's and one near the end of the road. |

Rozsival to the Panthers for Dan Ellis. Ellis gets sent to Rockford. |

Hawks do have strength - if a team wants an Oduya, that creates a potential deal; two teams want him, that creates a market.
The Hawks problem is that they are limited as to what they can take back - can't be a full-value roster player - that probably wouldn't create the necessary cap relief - has to be draft picks, prospects, cheap young roster players. |

I don't think there is any deal possible that the Hawks would "want" to offer that could convince the Sens to trade Lazar.
Best deal for both sides that actually might work Sharp for Zach Smith and a 2nd round pick. |

Agreed, but I don't think Zack Smith is going anywhere. Good value at $1.8 per for a pivot isn't easy to come by. |

The Hawks could take a contract or two back - as long as the cap hit is low enough to hide the majority of that cap hit or all of the cap hit in Rockford.
Currently, the tentative roster for Rockford has 3 goalies, 11 defenseman, and 14 forwards. It wouldn't hurt to have another forward or two and a goalie in the mix. |

Exactly right. Flyers tried to give the Senators LaCavalier, a 20 goal scorer. but Senators wanted Flyers to eat 1/2 of his cap hit and take back $2.6m in salary on a player (Greening). |

even trying to create competition will not get the hawks a dollar for dollar deal as both or all teams will know that chicago has to make a deal. remember that teams are trading an asset to the hawks just by taking a player... deal almost looks like oduya to cal for 2nd plus cap space. for example |

made my point with that example... sens and nashville knew philly was up the creek and held out for a deal they wanted... didn't get it? see ya philly... good luck with you cap. chicago is in a similar position, though not as bad as they have some more valuable assets. despite that those valuable assets are not going to fetch what they should do to the cap situation |

Moving Roszival alone isn't enough to clear the cap problem, and even if it was I doubt you would see a 22 man roster. I can't see anyone giving up even a 7th for Versteeg, and again it wouldn't be enough on its own.
I think JJ has it right - Oduya makes the most sense in terms of cap value, especially since I think they will fight tooth and nail not to have to move Sharp. I think Calgary could be a good landing spot, or even Edmonton if they are so inclined. Who gets the roster spot to replace him, though? Do they try to bring back Brookbank on the cheap (can't be much more than $1M)? Do they promote Clendening or Dahlbeck? |

I think Smith is outstanding value. Coach loves him. Stands up for his team mates. Takes a lot of face offs in his own end. Smith is the kind of guy that helps a team win a Cup. Fans think he is just okay. But the guys in the room understand he puts in hard minutes every night against the other team's top player. And, as you say, a great great contract. |

The only way for the Hawks to get a deal is if they are dangling an asset that multiple teams in the East covet enough to push the price higher. I think that could be Leddy if anybody. |

Dahlbeck has the inside track on a roster spot. I'd have to think the only way Clendening gets any consideration is if Leddy is traded. |

Boston can't afford that. Similar cap issues and they still have to resign Krug and Riley Smith. Can't take what Sharp makes. |

Money talks. Everybody wants to avoid Leddy's agent next year. Leddy is a good kid. His agent is a snake.
It is not just the Hawks that have cap troubles. The Bruins and Flyers are in worse shape. Next year the cap goes to $72.5m (Bettman estimate) so other teams are all getting very cautious on taking back dead weight contracts. |
