But we're wasting him by not trading all of our young players for Nail Yakupov and Zach Bogosian.

I'd trade for Bogosian. I wouldn't for Yakupov.

I saw where you guys debated that over the weekend, as far as Bogosian was concerned.

I have questions about his hockey sense, but none about his physical tools. I don't want to trade anyone right now, but I have to admit that if the guy is even average defensively and thinks the game at an average level, he'd be the best defender on the Flyers. Because he does have elite tools.

But he'd be effing costly.

I'd trade for either, if the opportunity were there to poach them for relatively cheap or for veteran pieces that might not fit in the long-term plan.

If you're Winnipeg, though, you can probably find a better trading partner than the Flyers, even if you said you don't want to deal him in the Western Conference.

I'm not saying that the Flyers COULDN'T get him. It's that there are other teams out there who have even more pieces than the Flyers do who could offer up some pretty nice packages.

For instance: If the Islanders started throwing pieces around, they could land some folks.

There is that -- pretty much the Schenns have to go back, right, to make the money work and for the Jets to feel like they're getting value?

And even that might not be enough -- I could see them asking for a pick, too?

But a team like the Islanders or the Blue Jackets could probably beat that if they wanted to; the Leafs could throw some interesting assets at it...there are teams out there who could just make better offers, I think.

Then again, as the MDZ thing showed, the market for young reclamations isn't nearly as crazy as it is for the middling vets coming off good years.

Maybe the trade price won't be nearly as high as we think. The few teams out there still shopping might have their sights set elsewhere.

edit: lets be honest, though... it's ChevylDayOff... chances of him doing nothing are extraordinarily high.

It's definitely unusual. Cheveldayoff might be one of the more conservative GMs the game has ever seen. I just wonder how long they'll stagnate in mediocrity before actually doing something about it.

I'm not sure if Giroux's capable of a 44G - 87A - 131PT season as a one-man show.

What I don't understand about them is what exactly are they trying to accomplish?

I have certainly argued today that you have to believe that your young players are going to come through for you, but at the same time, the Western Conference is no effing joke -- there were SIX 100-point teams out there, and another with 98 points!

And they finished seven points behind the eighth-place team in Dallas, which might've had one of the strongest offseasons in the league.

I just don't get it. Right now, there's no reason to believe any of those eight teams are falling out of the playoffs -- and even if they do, you were still behind Phoenix and Nashville!

I just don't get that team. I don't even see how you tell your fanbase that you're trying to make the playoffs, at this present time, if you're the Jets.

Bourne was positing that they might be 'positioning' themselves for McDavid.

Oh. OK.

See, that's my biggest problem -- I never think teams are going to try to lose enough to be in the lottery.

Man, we have been spoiled by Ed Snider. For all the things he doesn't do well, one thing the Flyers have NEVER done is make me understand what it's like to root for a loser.

So did I miss a ton of fascinating analytic discussions? I've been MIA for a few days. I wanted to pop in and say HI and commiserate with those who miss hockey as much as I do right now.
I went to the Phillies game yesterday with a bunch of co-workers. I have now seen a someone take a professional pitch to the head. That was about the only exciting part, hahaha....

Not really analytics, just some riveting discussion about the difference of a small sample size versus a large sample size. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the dramatic conclusion.

Getting either Eichel or McDavid would really help them out in the future w/ attracting players to WPG... like the way 87 and 99 turned their sad outposts into A+ destinations.

I don't think anything can make Winnipeg an A+ destination because, well, it's Winnipeg. LA has its obvious perks, and even in Pittsburgh, you're not far from a number of top cities and sites. Winnipeg is like Calgary, but without oil.

I really hope that any team that obviously tanks gets McDavid and he sucks...until he's deemed a bust, traded to the Flyers for whatever Leighton-type they have is and he breaks all of Gretzky's records in 4 games.
