With the contracts signed this summer for d men Dion 7 million cap hit really isn't out of the question and will look better as it goes. He will be 35/36 by the end of the contract which in todays NHL is not ancient like it once was. - Yeti1181
I agree on the cap hit, soon that number will be the norm but we are slowly starting to see Dman slow down at age 34 w/exception to some of course.
And in fairness I/we don't know if Phaneuf will slow down, I'm just going by how todays players are bigger & stronger and there bodies are not holding up when time takes its course.... |

the leafs would have gotten a nice return for dion/kadri package
maybe ekblad and barkov - Flyfreaky
Little bit of a stretch but would agree if Leafs offered both those players would definitely get a nice return.

Why trade kadri though? Good young player with skill whos still learning. - Yeti1181
I always laugh when people say that. A 23 year old center with a lot o potential. Yeah we should trade him. All I ask is why? |

Who knows maybe they did. I'm convinced they are trying to trade Phaneuf. I also think they will be patient with it. I don't think he will be on the team in three years. |

if they have to wait for three years to move him then you'd better be happy when the leafs only get a 6th for him |

Why trade anyone? Ever? To upgrade when possible... shed salary... or there is a greater need somewhere else.
TO sure has a lot of "superstar" players for not making the playoffs last year. |

You want us to shed KAdri 2.5 million salary? Kid is still very young if you trade him your going to get the same type of player back with the same risk/reward. No where did he say superstar so.....
EDIT: Toronto's problem isn't the top end talent its the bottom six being absolutely useless. |

Does having a bottom six that know what the game of hockey actually is count as culture change? |

I just think it has to do w/the contract and length of it as well. Bailey is almost $3.5M cheaper every year w/4 years left in comparison to 6yrs left for Dion. Now there could be a slight addition to the trade like a Donovan or another minor piece if you get my point? But I would think that some type of salary exchange will have to be made on any team trade, not just isles. - Ur Not Me
Bailey is garbage...that's why he's on every Isle's fans trade list. Leaf fans with brains wouldn't trade Dion for Bailey...in any combination. Dion's contract has gotten better and better over the last month, and it'll only get better with time. |

You have to learn from your mistakes as a leaf. Hold on, give him a few more years. |

He's the best d man on one of the bottom 5 Defensive teams in the league. And he routinely gets skated around and burned by horrible pinches. You can have him. I don't need a qoc stay to tell me what my eyes can see in the games. He's a 2-3 D on 85% of the teams in the league. But if your happy than that's awesome. That's exactly what MLSE wants you to think when your paying the most for tickets and $17 glasses of beer, not pints. - SmielmaN
He'd be the #2 guy on the current cup champs.
You're saying he's not a top 70-80 NHL D-Man and I'm guessing you think he is worth 4.5 million max on the open market as per the individual I was responding to.
Thanks for the laugh. You've now said you think the Habs horribly overpaid Subban. |

Dion/Kadri/Nylander for Ekblad and Barkov? No thanks. The over-valuing of prospects who have done nothing has reached a critical and laughable level. |

The rumours of how much it would have taken to get Ekblad alone was a joke. No way the Leafs should have even considered that. |

you're wrong, the only player you're losing in that trade is kadri and ekblad and barkov will more than make up for that |
