Doesn't have a clue. So much surface level thinking demonstrated here that it is a complete embarrassment to your handle. mr. data implies deep thinking. So munch on the fact the Sabres have deliberately set a course for being a poor results team for the upcoming seasons while getting leadership in place to maximize the compete level...so we lose because we don't have any scoters ready to play in the NHL, but we are stockpiling a ton of them with that potential that should begin to impact the team beginning with the 15-16 season. So yes, we will suck in terms of points this upcoming year...that is the Plan.then land McEichel and another 2 1st round selections and the team is then position to compete with the Conference leaders. The Plan.
Meanwhile, Montreal turns to youth and will have growing pains now that Buffalo acquired their leadership...I foresee a bit of a step backwards ... Not huge, but will struggle to be a top. 3 team in the East while the youth finds its way as leadership.
As far as Edmonton goes...it's about time they start to move up, don't you think...MINGA they have fumbled the ball along the way.

I fear he spends too much time thinking about colorful outfits and not enough time thinking about his swing.

He makes more money that way than he does with his swing.

Geno Smith is not better than EJ !

- Maximum Signal

I saw more signs that he will be a starting QB in the NFL than I did out of EJ. I think this year will be telling for both.

Anyone watch the video of Tony Stewart hitting and killing another driver? Looked to be on purpose as well, from what I saw. He revs his engine and swerves into the direction of the kid when he had plenty of room on the other side to avoid him. IMO deserves jail time at the very least for manslaughter.

Where is the vid?

Edit: just saw the vid on tmz. It did look intentional. Poorly lit track though. Kid was an idiot. Runnin around dodging race cars trying to point at Stewart. If he was that much of a hot head at 20, something was bound to happen.

So, to be honest - though I work with statistics in part for a living, NHL stats don't interest me in the slightest. It's just because of how my brain works and the role that things like Hockey play in it.

I can work the numbers, there are times when I even enjoy it - but it's something I make myself do for work. My left brain works for me.

But it's my right brain I turn to when I'm trying to kick back and relax, and this is what Hockey helps me do. My right brain is there for my enjoyment.

So I think it's as simple as this - I prefer to think of hockey as a narrative, in terms of characters and themes - villains and heroes and strife and conquest. It's because the other 'things i think about when i'm not thinking about work' follow the same pattern - i read books, i play video games that tend to have complicated story arcs, I drink beer brewed by monks who developed their recipe as a tonic against the bubonic plague... whatever.

I realize the role analytics must play in building a successful NHL team in this day and age, but my brain rejects the effort to find a place in my left brain for something my right brain cherishes so much. And since I'm not a GM, this works for me. I credit people who (accurately) throw around Coris and Fenwick analyses, but within the space between my own two ears, I only give it as much consideration as "this guy helps drive possession" - which is an important element to success in a more narrative sense.

Thanks for letting me bore you today,
nfph.

This is a great post. I don't deny certain aspects of advanced stats. There are some good indicators and now most teams use those to varying effect. That's all fine. But I don't personally need to watch the game through their lens. If I try an amazing beer, I'll enjoy it. I don't need the details behind what made that specific beer work to appreciate it more. That's where I'm at with hockey. I don't need Coller or Schopp using the stats as a way of 'proving' right and wrong, which honestly is the negative aspect of the stat trend. They take data and dismiss parts of it if it doesn't help make their point about Player X.

Your last sentence is dead on and I feel the same way. They make these definitive statements using advanced stats and NEVER tell the whole story.

He should, but won't. Prepare for this:

1) Statement from Stewart expressing sincere condolences.
2) espn interview where he squeezes out a tear
3) one week later it is forgotten and accepted by average sports fan. They'll say Ward was stupid to get out of car and accidents happen.

Tune in to find out!

Stephen A Smith will then say while he doesn't condone drivers killing other drivers, those that get in an accident should not provoke fellow drivers as they come around a turn.

Watch the video again.

The car right in front of Stewart swerved to miss him, and Stewart's car plowed into him. Stewart did move (the wrong way), but it may have been a reaction more than anything.

I don't watch the "sport" or any variation of it (250 left hand turns), but I would imagine anything happening at that rate of speed has way too many variables.

I do not understand why a driver would accelerate when a wreck has occurred and be driving toward the wreck instead of to the bottom of the track

2 years from now the blame will be on the driver for walking on the track instead of staying in his car, but geez where does common sense need to happen from the drivers in cars
