The other guys are really really really good... but they don't compare w/ 99/66/Orr/Howe/Bossy, etc.

And I agree. you can only have 1-2 "generational talents" per generation. I don't think a 9-year span differentiates a generation. But yes, there's Crosby and the rest right now.

Cooke purposely lifted his skate and cut Eric Karlssons achilles two years ago

Lets say Marchman confined himself to knees if thats true and Cooke spread the misery around the body and Stevens only head shot vulnerable players who were already engaged by other players on his team ( Ron Francis and Daymond Langkow were the two worst other ones aside from Kariya and Lindros)

I do and feel very comfortable calling him a tier below those players at this stage in his career.

The NBA is different. That league requires you to gain one superstar and try and build around them. The only way to get that superstar is to be in the top three or five. If you're middle of the road, playoff bubble team, you're not going tot make progress in the NBA.

In the NHL, you can still get quality players in the mid to late 1st round--guys who will do more than simply be a bench warmer. If the NHL was like the NBA, draft wise, Edmonton would be cruising to another Stanley Cup.

I know generally the NBA is like that (around one guy).. But I compared it to the Sixers because they're talking about tanking again this season for the draft. So instead of building around a guy like MCW, they're going to tank again to get another early round pick. I'm not an NBA fan, so it doesn't really matter to me... but I just hate the whole premise.. be it in NBA, NHL, NFL, or anything...

I agree though, the NHL drafts are usually deep in regards to talent. But that's exactly why I hate the tanking aspect. Heck, it seems a lot of the late first rounders usually work out as good, if not better than some of the top 10 busts in history anyway.

Like I said, I'd rather take my chances at a late round pick while trying, than be given a #1 by trying to lose.

Stevens hit hard, but a good amount of the onus, as much as I hate to say it, was on the players for cutting across the middle with their heads down. You are told from age 5 on up to skate with your head up.

Matt Cooke had dirty hits (really? We're still on about the Karlsson thing???), absolutely. But he was a guy who wasn't out there looking to injure someone, he just didn't know how to let up. Remind you of anyone currently on the Flyers.

Marchment deliberately targeted players' knees to severely injure them or end their career. When he did that, he had one intent, and it was to cause severe injury to players.

Why stop there? They are obviously the best players to ever play and win multiple future Stanley Cups, NHL Awards, Olympic medals and marry/divorce the hottest super models in the universe, and re-marry and re-devorce said super models that have ever yet to play in the NHL. Generational talents!

In five years that statement could be true. But this core will just get older while we wait for their emergence.

Everyone gets older. You can't stop it. If you weed out some of these so so 4 to 5 million defensemen and get the kids in the lineup when they're ready (one or two this season at some point and one or two the next) and you have a more dynamic back end.

The only way you're getting a number one D is to gamble on an underacheiver and trade a forward or package a top line center and prospects and picks for a 1 or 2 who is older. Neither of those options are particularly palatable.

But you can only get a guy like Weber, Subban, Letang, Karlsson, Ekman-Larsson, or Suter by drafting in the top 3.

He's in the same group as Jagr, Forsberg, Sakic, Yzerman, Bure, the Hulls, etc.... ridiculously good, but still not at that once-in-a-long-while level.

There's generational talents, and then there are legends. Those guys (and Howe) are pure legends. No one is on their level, but it's plain that Crosby is just on another level than everyone else right now.

Your d prospect timeline is unrealistic IMHO. The will get the 9 game try outs maybe but to be fixtures on the blue line playing serious minutes and altering a game is a while away. The prospecs have huge upside but to think they will make immediate impacts right away is unrealistic.

Seems pretty clear with MDZ signing plus hex tall continuously saying he won't rush prospects and doesn't see any of them playing this season... The only prospect who is ready is Laughton and he isn't a d man.

He isn't. If he can continuously put up 90+ points for the next 6 years or so and can nail down a piece of hardware or two, then he may be.
