MDZ better have his head in the game come October. With grossman as a partner the puck will be in his skates faster than you can say zotto wins lotto

No he waited so long and signed for that much because he had a bad year. He's better than his contract. He just signed a one year contract worth that much so he can prove himself as the player he was a few years ago. And if that happens he will be a bargain this year.(already is at 1.3 million AAV) then next year he will be signed to a big raise.

We'll see. I guess my expectations aren't as high as others. I would be happy if I were proven wrong.

As much as I hate that style of hockey, it might be to the Flyers benefit to concentrate more on clogging up the middle of the ice and using their speed on the counter.
- Doc_Sarcasm

They might.

Personally, I didn't have huge expectations coming into this year and taking a flier on a young guy like MDZ isn't the end of the world. I just wish it didn't come at the expense of Kimmo Timonen's health. I just hope the dude can get by this and be healthy, regardless of his hockey future.

MDZ will be great for you guys. He's a stud when he's on his game and I think he will find it again in Philly and probably become a mainstay on your defense for years to come.

I hope you're right. He had some good times in New York, to go along with those struggles.

He's not going to be Kimmo Timonen, but he could be a nice solid addition. He'll probably have a chip on his shoulder and be out to prove people wrong.

- Jsaquella

Worst comes to worst he is a bottom pairing d man who can chip in some offense. He way better than the way he played last year. At 1.3 AAV it's a steal. Low risk high reward signing.

The Eminger-factor is definitely there... except this time they didn't give up a 1st-rounder to run the experiment.

If you follow that rationale, Engelland/Stoner are 3X better that MDZ is?

Let's face it, you're not going to find a free agent on August 5th with no warts.

Kimmo is on my list of favorite flyers of all time. I really hope that beyond all else, he makes a full medical recovery even if he never laces up a pair of skates again.

Is he really a train wreck defensively or is it being exaggerated?

Yep, it's a one year deal. if he can't rebound, you let him walk. If the team is struggling and out of the playoffs and he's not in the future plans, they might be able to dump him at the TDL.

And if he does rebound and play like he did a couple years ago, he could be a pretty nice reclamation project

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not

You're not going to find a free agent defenseman with no warts at anything less than 10 million per.

Some of those warts can be more perceived than reality, too. Tom Gilbert and Ron Hainsey turned out to be a lot better than a lot of guys who went on July 1, contract value aside.

No one is really complaining about the MDZ signing. I think its more about the expectations for him.

Oh, for sure. MDZ is viewed as awful defensively. He's coming off a horrible year. But he's a guy that came in really young and had some good seasons. He might end up being horrible, but it's a low risk deal. If he sucks, send him to Lehigh Valley and play Schultz.

Then draft McDvaid

I really remember people here being PISSED when Nashville gave up so little for MDZ and that the Flyers weren't in on him.

I'd rather try to "buy low" on MDZ than rush one of our drafted assets.
