Question of the day

Is there any team that would be in bigger trouble than the flyers if their best player goes down? My answer is no. I believe the flyers rely on giroux more than any team relies on any single player

My next best guess is tavares and the isle

- Just5

This isn't as much a question as much as it is an on going discussion. Without a doubt the key to sucess for the Flyers is through Giroux.

not sure if mdz is that much worse the kimmo at this point, kimmo was awful last year.
- mydoglicks

While he struggled some at 5 on 5, especially early in the season, don't forget that he was often out against the other teams top lines. Also, he was solid on the PP and very good on the PK.

The problem the Flyers have, is the same one they really had last year. They simply don't have anyone to play with Coburn on the top pair. They don't necessarily need a dominant #1 guy, but they need a JayBo/Girardi type, a mobile, strong defender to go with Coburn on that pairing.

Nashville would probably go from failing to qualify for the playoffs with Weber, to failing to qualify for the playoffs without Weber.

So when can he be put him on LTIR?

I'm assuming he will not be collecting his 4M bonuses and will therefore not count on overage next season.

Just realized the answer is the same as Pronger. I now need a complete update on their options. JC.

Timonen's bonuses total 1.5M. And the Flyers options are the same as Pronger. Only the numbers have changed.

They'd be relegated to the NBA without him.

Well if Giroux does go down, their chances of landing McDavid improve greatly.

Nah, they'd still be better than Buffalo and likely Florida. Mason and Giroux would both have to go down.

If Timonen chose to retire prior to the start of the season, does the entire contract come off the cap?

Actually, with their franking luck, both probably will go down, they will finish last overall and still end up with the 2nd pick

Best wishes for Kimmo. Sometimes, great things can arise from terrible situations. Im excited to see what MDZ does this year, and try to remember that he's only 24. Our D just got younger and faster. Hopefully improved team D will make up for any defensive liabilities from our defense. Even with Kimmo gone, I still consider 5 of our starting 6 dmen to be generally sound in the defensive zone.

They have 7 roster defensemen and at least 3 players in the AHL who can play at the NHL level next season if not 5.

Looks like for the first time in a long time, they won't be carrying any dmen that probably shouldn't be in the NHL... that's a silver lining for ya.

With a few exceptions, the overall tone is doom and gloom. I still see the Flyers as a playoff team.

I do as well, but their margin for error has shrunk. Any more serious injuries on D and I think they would be on the outside looking in.

Obviously the loss of Giroux or Mason would be devastating while losing Couturier, Voracek or Simmonds would be almost as bad, IMO

FWIW

I would go with the following D pairs at even strength
Coburn-Streit
AMac-Schenn
Grossmann-MDZ

on the Pk and when protecting a lead in the last 10 minutes of a game:
Grossmann-Coburn
AMac-Schenn

and, when trailing late in a game:
Coburn-Streit
MDZ-Schenn or AMac

thoughts?

- BiggE

That's probably what I would do.

But I read the story today on CSNPhilly, I think, where it sounds like Chief wants to try Coburn-AMac.

Now, I wouldn't do that. But, as always, I'm just a guy on a laptop.

Yeah, not my ideal choice, but he may as well try it out in preseason and at least get a look.
