Homer already spent all the money on AMac. Hexy managed to add Schultz and retain Kimmo on cheaper deals than we all could have hoped for. And as if the other GMs didn't already know the Flyers were desperate before this latest news broke.

It definitely hurts.

Timonen was still, even in his decline, the team's most steady defenseman. He didn't play as much 5 on 5, but he was relied heavily on for the specialty teams.

Coincidentally or not, the areas where Timonen was a big part of the team were the areas where the team was the strongest. Without paying a premium, they're not going to replace him.

Right now, the three names I'd consider on short term, low cash deals are Del Zotto, Rafael Diaz and Jamie McBain. None of them will replace Timonen's smarts, grit or all around game, but at the very least they're all fairly young and have good skating ability and offensive skills.

I know no one wants to do this but, does any of this move up the time table of Morin, Haag, ghost, etc?
- FlyersFirst

It shouldn't. Even with Timonen, Hextall knew the Flyers were not a first tier contender. Losing Timonen is a blow, but it's not like they were a Cup favorite who saw Duncan Keith or Drew Doughty go down with an injury in the summer.

Definitely... that's why I suggested signing both McBain and MDZ ( would be happy w Diaz as well)... you surely can't replace Kimmo, but a couple of puck-moving guys should be able to offset a good part of the loss in tandem, whereas only one is probably closer to a drop in the bucket.

Yep, right now, they have to find a way to tread water. A guy like Morris or whoever is fine, but I can't see trying to make a trade. Hextall'd be the most desperate guy at the table.

I didn't really back read much, so I didn't see the other names suggested.

They could make a minor deal with someone with the little cap space they have unless they take a flier on someone like MDZ, as is being reported.

I was pretty fine with taking a step back this year, to take 2 forward next year.

I'd take Morris over MDZ, at least Morris can chip in on the pk. Considering that you really don't want Streit killing penalties, I don't want a 2nd dman in the lineup that can't work the pk.

Streit can handle the top pp unit and, since it seems the 2nd unit only gets about 30 seconds anyway, I can live with AMac/Morris or, if he is ready, AMac/Alt.

I think I'd rather have Morris. Seems like he had a decent season, but the Coyotes no longer have room for him.

My first choice is still Diaz. I'd consider any of the other three. They all bring something to the table. Probably have Morris right there with the other.

I think a lot of this talk is a little premature. Timonen could be healthy and ready to play come October. The Season is two months away.

I wouldn't bet on it, they kept Vokoun out for the entire year and he only had it in one area of his body.

Obviously I'll hope for the best but I wouldn't bank on him playing at all.

Folks are speculating because of this:

Hextall said that this could be a “long term situation” and that he’s not going to pressure young prospects to fill his role this fall, but rather sign a veteran to the squad.

“I hate to even speculate,” Hextall said. “The best I can say is that it could be a long term thing. Can he play at some point next season? I don’t have the answer to that. I know he’s in stable condition and doing well.”

I'd give Del Zotto a "prove yourself" contract. Guy will be out of the league if ge doesn't turn it around soon. He has the talent. With that chip on his shoulder he could turn into an absolute steal.

Diaz and Morris would be ok too. No McBain please.

Yeah, I don't think he plays again. Crappy way to go out for the guy if it ends up that way. He deserves better. Hopefully he'll be happy and healthy and with his family and it doesn't continue as a recurring issue.

I wouldn't bet on it either. And I think the odds are against it, but you never know.

I've read it all. The key words there are I hate to even speculate. That's what it is at this point, it's speculation. He could miss some time or a lot of time. Or maybe he doesn't miss any time. We don't know for sure at this point. They don't even know.

I'll tell you another thing. A lot of Hockey writers need to learn the definition of a 35+ contract.

I think the chances of him starting the season with the team is very slim. He can't even get on an airplane for 3 weeks. Even if he's cleared by the start of the season, he likely won't have enough time to get into hockey shape.

Anyone have the terms?

I guess MDZ was just waiting to find the best possible landing spot. He'll definitely get some PT with the Flyers.
