a rolling stone may be faster than the flyers D - vejim
They just replaced the slowest Dman we have with a fairly speedy guy. Time for some new material. |

Figure Kimmo goes straight to LTIR. This is the second time around with the blood clots. This is pretty serious, these things can kill. Don't count on Kimmo. They may have looked at MDZ, but jumped because of this bad news. No stop gaps. Right now with Del Zotto in at $1.3 M, they're a hair under $3 M in cap space with Kimmo and obviously Pronger on LTIR. Maybe 2 spots to fill, obviously with either a youngster or a bargain.

I think it's more about flexibility. Do they still have enough to take a run at Hayes? Will they have overages for next season? Will they have the flexibility to make a move in season? Will they have enough room to bring up people if they need to? - PhillySportsGuy
I agree, it is about flexibility. But as we see here, there's lots of ways of getting flexibility. The only real question now is what happens if Timonen is not out for the entire season.

Streit-PP QB(was better at it than Kimmo last year anyway)
AMac-Solid top 4 two-way Dmen
Coburn & Schenn- Solid Top4 defensive defensemen, fine players when paired with legit puck movers, which they look to be.
Grossmann-Shotblocker, PKer
Del Zotto-Can move and carry a puck well enough to carry the 3rd pair. Upside to maybe do even more
It's far from stellar but it works for me. On paper at least. - hereticpride
They're made up of a bunch of guys who "need the right partner."
Is it a coincidence that Luke Schenn had his best season in 2012-13 when paired with Timonen and Coburn had a bounce back season in 2013-14 when paired with Timonen?
Who is going to be the guy who steps up and makes his teammates better? I feel the team will miss that as much as they miss his actual play. His ability to make his partner better will be an underrated aspect of his loss. |

I don't see the problem as so much needing the right partner. The problem is that with Timonen out, every one pretty much has to be moved up. For instance, MacDonald now pretty much becomes a top pair defenseman on this team. He's not really suited for it. Everyone has to play more minutes to replace Timonen.

I want to know one thing. There's been numerous debates on here on the Flyers Cap space issue, and I was told by numerous people that the Flyers don't have the money to sign anyone, and they can't add any free agents. Well they've now added Emery, Schultz, and Del Zotto in Free Agency to the tune of 3.55M dollars. Where's that cap space come from? - MJL
You were right.
There. Happy?

So the highlights since the season ended are the Capt grabbing a cops ass, and blood clots. Totally awesome! Beats landing a stud free agent or improving the team via trade. |

I just feel Timonen's ability to raise the game of his partner should not be overlooked. Coburn was good for this team last year, but I don't know if we can assume he'll be just as good when paired with Amac instead of Timonen. |

I'm going with the belief they'll be in the middle of the round & I'm thinking of putting an early list of prospects together. |

And younger. MDZ is only 24, almost 8 months younger than LSchenn.
It'll be a good time for each of these guys to finally figure it out. |

I think that it's safe to assume that not having Timonen for however long is going to affect the team in a lot of ways. Things like this create opportunity for others. Time to step up.

I like anyone else hopes Kimmo Timonen has a safe and speedy recovery.
I hope this doesn't come off heartless because I'm speaking from a place that came from before we re-signed Timonen and a place that thought he was going to retire at season's end. I personally wouldn't have re-signed Timonen to begin with and I voiced such. I think many of us view him as a number one defenseman still. I think so much is made about age, except when it comes to Kimmo Timonen. I think it was only a matter of time until age and injuries caught up with him. I love the guy and I would love nothing more then to see him raise a Cup ANYWHERE but how surprising is this news really? Apart of you has to be shocked and feel for the guy but on the other hand, looking over his recent history, it's shocking this hasn't happened sooner. Ready or not, there was always going to be a time when this guy couldn't come back.

And by stud free agent, you mean shelling out a contract to a player that will expire in his late 30s along with its 7+ mil cap hit. |

Well, Del Zotto wasn't my first choice, but honestly, at this stage of the game, anyone they signed has flaws.
I hope he plays well and maybe finds a home here -- Lord knows there is opportunity -- and becomes a good result after a pretty tough news day. |
