Took some time to sign him because they were probably trying to get him at 8-8.5M$ a year. What a lack of respect !

The way I see it, they negotiated a deal, a long, lucrative deal. The arbitration IS part of this process to protect the team (and the player). Could it have been done earlier? Maybe. Are the bridges burnt between Subban and the organization? No. He could have decided to sign the arbitrator deal and become UFA 2 years from now.

But as usual, Wilde went with the overly dramatic, sensational approach. It just irritates me.

The guy was literally crying on twitter the day Gorges was traded. It's his MO, it seems. The players can do no wrong...

- Pecafan Fan

I agree with ASP.

Did the Habs try and get the best deal possible until the very end? Yes, so did Subban.

In the end, this contract pretty much confirms what everyone thought at first: Both the team and the player wanted to commit to each other but wanted to get as much as they could.

These guys are professionals, not kids in a playground getting their feelings hurt.

i think the media was justified in painting the situation as dire on Friday because it was. whatever happened between the hearing and the signing doesn't seem like it was all part of MB's plan. it seems there was a sharp course change at some point that no one saw coming. but just because the situation worked itself out, doesn't mean that things didn't look ugly at some point.

This is well said. Dire: "Sign him for what he's willing to sign for over 8 years, or say goodbye. He didn't cave at the idea of going through with arb, he didn't cave after arb, and we're going to get slaughtered in several different ways."

Path of least resistance is the deal that keeps him in Montreal for 8 years, the deal that still saves us money in the long-term, the deal that keeps him from playing for a rival, the deal that keeps us from the scorn of our fanbase, the deal that keeps us on the same path we've set out on--to be a winning team.

Well, we're not connected like you are, but from here, you're wrong.
PK's agent as to get as much of the blame as MB IMO.
Pretty sure both made a step, from 8 to 9 and from 10 to 9, to find an agreement. The question is, why not do it prior to the arb meeting?

- fidopro

yes im wondering if there was any movement on PK's side after the arb hearing or if all the movement was on Montreal's side. or if 8/72 was on the table Friday morning.

Eric - he signed for 8 years @ $9 Million per year. I may be taking a leap here, but I believe it's safe to say that if there were any hurt feelings, or any issues of trust acting as a barrier for a long term deal, they were all discussed and taken care of prior to the signing.

No, give him all the money he wants, forget about the cap. Let PK play alone on his team...works so well everywhere else.

So with PK locked up long term, how long before MT gets fired?

Perhaps Pk and his agent came out of the hearing on Friday thinking that they were not going to get anywhere near the 8.5 they wanted for the 1 year deal and dropped down to 9 over 8 years to recoup some of the money that may have been lost for next year from an arb award

Then why do we have to criticize the way it went down? Obviously, both sides did what they needed to do, and they made it happen.

Never seen to much drama even in the Gainey era.
Bergevin is french-québécois, deal with it.
