Do you think I did? I stand by every single thing I said on Friday. I was adamant that if this thing amounted to a one-year settlement decided by the arbiter, that was a gross failure and some real bad business. To me, there were only two options after the arb hearing: Sign him to the deal he wants or trade him. There was no, let's re-evaluate in 6 months. No, let's sign him next summer. There was no point of return from where arbitration would've taken them had the ruling come down.
Someone came up to me this weekend and said, "I think Bergevin's a genius," and then said "you see!". Nothing genius about it. They could've signed him on Friday to the same deal he signed on Saturday. They made a play and the play failed and hurt both sides.
And, as I mentioned in my blog, it's disappointing we haven't heard from Bergevin. Because he should be trumpeting this new deal and reinforcing the idea that this was all just tough business. That will inevitably happen, but if you think he didn't take some of this personally as well, you're deluded. - EricEngels
You are making so many assumptions.
Nobody really knows what was offered by the Habs on a long-term deal, and what were Subban's (Meehan's) demands. I don't understand why everybody in the media pins Bergevin as the sole Richard in this whole thing. He has a team to manage and must think long term. |

yes. and I spoke with so many other reporters and hockey people that do to. we all had the same exact impressions as arbitration got underway, and certainly after it was done:
The Canadiens had less than 48 hours to sign him long-term or leave.
And Brian was much more tempered than I was in his analysis, saying he wouldn't take the gloves off unless Bergevin eventually made this huge blunder. He went on the radio and said "Bergevin hasn't made this mistake yet..." |

They've just never loved PK. They bridged him. Arbitrated him. Tried to trade him. Low balled him. Benched him. Critiqued him. What's next? |

"I think a lot of people need to understand that arbitration isn't always a negative process. It can be a positive, as well, and I really saw that it was. I saw it as a positive step for the process."

If Subban got 9M, he was probably asking for 10+ and Habs were offering 8. I don't get why the fact the deal was reached this late is pinned solely on Bergevin's head, while Subban and (especially) Meehan get out of it Scot-free. - stinger67
I tried to convey this logic in another thread; it was met with a fair amount of ignorance. i.e. "If they only wanted 8.5 why is he getting 9... MTL fail!!!"
NO official reports stated what he asked for long term, and I would wager that it was 10-11 per for 7-8 seasons. Most likely arbitration gave them both the opportunity to read the situation with the negotiator and decide to move forward from there. 9 per seems maybe 0.5-1 more than I think he is worth, but as the cap increases that difference will seem small. I am certain within 2 seasons another defender will step up and be making more and will make Subban's 9per look small. |

Yeah, Doughty's 7M for 8 years wasn't considered a bargain at the time. |
