we don't know what were Subban's demands initially, and Bergevin's job is to manage the cap. Sometimes in hard negotiations like that you need a third person to help the two others getting closer to make the deal. Molson being the owner, he could really have a heart to heart conversation with PK about his plans for the team and with him going forward long term, they probably didn't talked numbers that much (if it's all true)

we don't know initially but Todd is insinuating here that if it were Bergevin's decision, he would not have signed Subban at $72 million/9 years. so it doesn't really matter where negotiations started, it's where they were at the last point of the stalemate.
