Mike - i see what you are trying to say in this article. But it does come across as comparing the two defensemen!

They both bring an entirely different game to the rink, Myers will be solid 3/4 defensemen. Subban #1PP defenseman (along with Doughty & Karlsson). Myers name should not be said in the same sentence with these #1 D-Men.

- Irish 14

You missed the point of the blog.......

And Myers would be the best 4th defensemen in the NHL

maybe, irish...we won't know until a few years down the road...

subban isn't orr, coffey or lidstrom...although this contract puts him up in that stratosphere

I project the cap to rise to 74 for the 15-16 season and then settling in at 80 over the next 4-5 years

9m for subban won't hurt over the long term

What would he have gotten as a ufa in 3 years time if he had signed that 5x5 contract 2 years ago

He would gave easily received 11m in 3 years on an 8 year deal

- MTL1

And what if Montreal gave him 10 mil per year? Would he have "easily" gotten 12 on the open market?

I love the guesses on what he would have gotten on the open market after the extension was signed. We don't even know what the arbitrator would have awarded him.

at $74M subban eats up 12%...at $80M it's 11%

the real question, though--and i'm respectfully asking habs fans--is, what is their window for a cup at this time?

Which is fine but he never said Myers was a #1. He said his cap hit of 5.5 doesn't look bad now that "franchise" players are getting 8-9 mil.

I don't think any sane person would say right now they are comparable, however I wouldn't rule out Myers playing at that level when the Sabres can compete

Disagree here
The math simply doesn't work out enough to justify the risk

The deal Myers signed got him 38.5mil over 7yrs for a 5.5mil cap hit

If we had signed him to a bridge contract, say something like Schenn got, 3yrs and 3.5per
That would be 10.5mil
So even if we had to pay him 7mil on his next deal, that would be 28mil more over the next 4yrs..
That equals the same 38.5mil that we gave him

So where exactly did we save money?
We didn't

He's talking about his cap hit..... If a franchise D-man now makes 9 mil per (cap hit) then Myers at 5.5 isn't a massive overpayment.

Who cares about actual dollars?

as a percentage of the overall cap hit, myers' was much lower than subban's...

flexibility is the name of the game when it came to myers' contract...if he became elite, he'd be a steal...if faulterd there's room for the team to get out via trade befor 2016-17...

if he completely bombed?

there's no hiding

If he became elite we would've had to pay him about 7mil a year
What the simple math says...
Is that paying him 5.5mil for 7yrs doesn't save us money if we had signed him to a bridge contract and then had to "pay him"

So how was it a bargain?
Sure, his cap hit is 5.5m instead of 7.0m for years 4-7
But it was also 5.5m for years 1-3 when it could've been 3.5m

Since there would literally have been ZERO savings...
That deal made NO sense

Also, on a cheaper bridge contract Myers would be even easier to trade if we decided to move in a different direction
A 5.5mil cap hit really doesn't give much flexibility... Only compared to if we signed him to a 7mil a year deal... But if it got to that point we wouldn't wanna trade Myers anyways bc he'd have developed into a stud dman

disagree

to jump from 7 mil to 9 mil for a d man is a huge leap

so what does stamkos get, 12 mil?

- homiedclown

I think u can bet your paycheck stamkos will hit 11-12 mill per easy. He's the best scorer in the game and the face of the TBL

Chara led the league in giveaways before.

In fact Doughty was close to the top of the league this season.

You obviously missed the entire point of the blog.

If Subban is a franchise D-man making 9 million, then if Myers stays at his current level (a solid #2 trending upwards) then 5.5 mil per isn't bad at all

- sbroads24

I don't know if I'd call Myers a #2 right now

If he continues on from where he left off last season - and that's a big "if", because he hasn't shown that he could in the past - then he's a legit #2.

In the past he was 21-23 years old on a team that was free falling.

The lockout season was the only one that I would look at his numbers (relative to the rest of the team) and say he wasn't always at least our 2nd best defensemen
