It's a lot of money now, and it will be bargain 4 years from now. That's the way all these massive contracts are perceived, provided they keep up their level of play obviously.

I was under the impression that a GM's JOB is to negotiate a players salary DOWN from his asking price.

those were the numbers for 1 year. And the $5.5M was their lowball so that in the event of an average, it might pull it down. Much like his $8.25M was just for the 1st year... not the next 7...
