The Leafs players all speak well of him. I know there were rumours back in the day but from all accounts he's matured a lot these past few years (as often happens). - lumlums
What are they suppose to say? Yeah. We hate him but he is our guy. |

9 million is a ton of money for him but they had to sign him. He's one of the most exciting players to watch in the game, good on the Habs to lock him up. |

spending 90 minutes telling a player to his face everything wrong with the way he plays hockey. Then sign him to a deal for more money than he was asking for. - Sammich
He was askin 8.5 for 1 year
He was probably askin for 10.5 per for 8 years |

Even if he is overpaid by a million according to some, why is it a big deal? It's all perception, no one has major issues when a team overpays a bottom 6 player worth around 1.5-2.0M with a 2.5-2.8M dollar contract.
It ain't easy finding another Subban. |

It is what it is...business. The term dictated the amount per year. I like Subban and I'm glad a deal was reached. With all the $ being thrown around and the salary cap going up, 9m per won't seem that bad in a couple of years or so. |

we have no idea what he was asking for long term before arbitration. I don't think it was a bad deal for the habs, he's maybe overpaid by 1 million or so but its no big deal. Its not like that extra in cap space would bring in anything other than a 4th liner. I just think its stupid to go to arbitration, low ball the player and tell him all the negative things you see in his game. Then sign him to a long term deal before the arbitrator makes his decision. Waste of time |

Simply a game of poker. Subban called their bluff and won the hand. |

Its a good deal for both sides. Yeah maybe he is a tad overpaid for the 1st year or so but the deal is fine in the long term. |

Montreal got hosed! No way they can ice a decent team with that contract for that player. Makes Phaneufs contract look like a steal for the leafs. |

Also, too bad it's for 8 years. Such a mistake. He's an ok player with above average speed.*

The contract is worth it just so I don't have to listen to a year of I'll-conceived, low-ball, idiotic, insulting, asinine trade proposals for P.K. Now we can get back to hearing he's an overpaid, whiny bum who no one else would want on their team. Thank you Hockeybuzz forums for being so utterly predictable. |

The mutual uncertainty of an arbitrator ruling was finally enough to push the P.K. Subban negotiations over the top for both the player and the team.
The "Mutual Uncertainty" (real or perceived) had absolutely nothing to do with the ultimate resolution of this situation. The concerns were likely based on longer term circumstances than any short term pressures that the author has insinuated. |

Funny how yesterday almost every leaf fans were bating to the idea of signing Subban in Toronto when UFA in 2 years... then today he's back to a mi-tier D-man |

I was under the impression that a GM's JOB is to negotiate a players salary DOWN from his asking price.
Bergevin: "We think he is worth $5.5 million"
PK's Agent: "We think he is worth more in the 8-8.25 million range"
Bergevin: "Ok $9 million it is" - classic321
8-8.25 was for a 1-year deal. Long term numbers were never discussed; he could have been asking for 8 years 10+ per, we will never know most likely. Had they done a 1-year deal there was a risk of losing the players favor and having to pay out more per year than the 9 he will get. Overall I feel PK should have been 8-8.5 for the same duration, but as the cap rises this hit wont look too bad. Look at it this way, he is easily worth 4 million more than Phaneuf and we got him for only 2 million more than that pylon. |

Absolutely. I am sure 100% of GM's if they had Subban and his new contract they would swap him out for Dion Phaneuf strait up.
