Weiss isn't bad, but it was foolish of Detroit to let Val leave for the sake of 250k.

How did he do in the Playoffs for you?
Get used to it.

Perfect. Second. Line. Center.... Period!

Consistency was always his Achilles heal. He could play great for a while but when he fell off he fell pretty hard. He was so bad at face offs and covering defensively at the end of his last year here Babcock put him on wing made Franzen play center. That kind of thing happened a lot. Maybe that's all behind him though, we'll see.

There is a reason Wings let him go, it wasn't about the money.
It was about putting everything on the line when it mattered.
He was similar to Franzen, frustrating to watch, all talent, no heart, just gliding around
the ice, not using his body, not fighting for the pucks and so on.

I'm not sure you can measure 'heart' though. Nothing from the Lightning indicates that 'heart' was ever a problem.

Yes you can.
He is not a playoff performer, when it gets tough.
He is a perimeter player, afraid of taking hits.
But you will see for yourself.

He was "injured" again? Against the Habs?

Yes. He missed the last two games of the regular season with an injury. Lower body injury. He wasn't 100% in the playoffs, but he refused to use it as an excuse. He then declined to play at the World Championships.

That's not a measurement for heart. What I see in Filppula is a player who dominated the opposition on most nights when he was on the ice. I like having guys like that on my team.

As I said. Wait for the playoff no shows and long stretches of gliding around.
Wings management is not stupid, most of the time.
He was the second line center is Detroit as well and never, ever had good playoffs.
I don't care what he does in regular season.
It wasn't super great anyway in Tampa.

After watchin him play this year I think the complete opposite . I actually often saw him dropping his shoulder into guys trying to hit him and laying them on their ass while he keeps the puck as usual . He's one of my favorites t

Disappointment in the playoffs is something that Red Wings know a lot about.

58 points in 109 career playoff games. Over .5 ppg which is pretty solid. Fil's production in Detroit was directly correlated to his minutes.

One can say this is the best free agent signed in the yzerman era in tampa. Steve knew a lot about him from the redwings and acted very quickly to get him.

I remember literally everybody poopting on this deal. I liked it from day one since I've loved Filppula as a player for a while and especially when he and Mikko Koivu represented Finland in the World Championships a year or 2 ago together on the top line.

Too often, people look at contracts and base the future 5 years on the previous season the player had. The player is getting paid for the FUTURE, not the past. And not just the past year. It's hilarious when a player signs a deal and people say, "He's overpaid! He only scored 20 points last season!"

Yea well we're not paying him for his past production we're paying him for his future production.

We do not know the future... so we base contracts off the past... And in some cases how a player is doing during the season

I think the point of his comment was that you can't base a contract off one season as it should be based on a players entire body of work. As in Filppula's case he had 1 poor injury plagued season though previously he proved he could be a 50+ point 2nd line center that plays a strong 2 way game.

My point is that you can't automatically write off a contract because of 1 struggling season. I mean yea, there are contracts like David Clarkson's that you can tell will be a bust right off the bat, but a guy like Filppula who's always been talented and skilled and in his prime when he signed the deal gets shat on because of 1 injured season? People were proclaiming it one of the top 5 overpayments of the summer. Like c'mon give the guy a chance to play. You can dislike a deal and speculate he might not perform but people give absolutes like "this deal will be a total failure because he only scored 30 points last year."

so many salty wings fans trying to diminish his ability when 5 mil for a 2nd line center is now a STEAL in today's NHL...when 3rd line centers and #4/5 dmen make 5.7 and you have a 50-65 point center that carries possession for 5 mil you are getting excellent value...i love seeing the wings fans try to bring him down as they sit there with stephen weiss and whatever other scraps Holland has brought in lately the playoff run ends this year!! Detroit sucks! detroit sucks! ill miss those chants now that they are in the East....

I kind of expected more Detroit fans than this. But I guess most of them are still standing in the soup lines, or mugging someone, or being evicted from their rat trap of a house!

The Detroit trolls were nowhere to be found when filppula was lighting it up this year and thriving in Tampa . Now all of a sudden they're back and sound even more trollish after the season he had . He was injured during playoffs but still played ... Whoever was measuring heart earlier never mentioned that .
