Worst troll ever

Tatar is (frank)ing awesome, Nyquist has been great in Detriot... Sure they may not finish first, but I see them getting a Wildcard spot

- Oilers4Life14

So to be awesome you need to not score 20 goals and not hit 40 points?

So what about a guy like Kadri? Same age but Kadri has superior stats? is he a (frank)ing superstar?

Do you guys honestly believe arbitration hearings hurt peoples feelings??? I've never believed this. You have to be a pretty big wussy to not be able to take an arbitration hearing and not very professional if you don't understand its business. I'm convinced that's media driven, because these are grown men... not (frank)ing babies

- CFunk89

Yes I do. There is a reason smarts teams sign their players before the arbitration date hits. Nothing good comes out of it.

I can't find a definitive list of guys who went to arbitration (not just filed and signed before the date), but off the top of my head it seems like a lot of guys (particularly those close to UFA) go to UFA, go back to Europe, or sing crazy offer sheets. Not a lot of long term deals though.

While I agree with you that its foolish he hasn't signed yet either, there is alot you have misunderstood.

5.25M is NOT a counter offer (PLEASE PEOPLE STOP SAYING THIS)... it's Montreal's arbitration number, which means its the lower end of what the arbitrator can award Subban. By giving a low number (keeping in mind he's an RFA), the arbitrator usually awards between the team's and the player's number, if MTL gave a higher arbitrator number, he'd be getting more money automatically.

Mtl WILL NOT lose him in two years from this arbitration to UFA. Since he requested the arbitration, MTL gets to choose the term of the contract and they've already picked one year, so at the very least we can do this again next year ((frank) no).

Do you guys honestly believe arbitration hearings hurt peoples feelings??? I've never believed this. re: feelings, see Tommy Salo, arbitration hearing w/Milbury.

wasn't arbitration changed to award one or the other of the amounts, not in between? I thought I saw that somewhere, I could be mistaken.

while it may be part of the business, it's never a good thing to have your GM pointing out your many flaws while asking for a lower dollar amount, when PK could leave as a ufa in two years. If you want him signed long term, that seems a foolish way to go about it. Is he going to break down and cry like Salo did? Not a chance. Is it going to be in the back of his mind when Montreal comes to him next year asking for him to sign long term? Possibly.

Everyone in the hockey world seems to agree what PK's asking for is in the ballpark so the real question is, does montreal just intend to sign him well below his market value for the next two years while they hold his rights to try and save cap dollars for two years while damaging their relationship with PK?

If they want him signed through a ton of his ufa years they're going to have to pay what he's asking, if they don't want to do that until they have no choice it may be too late and he might walk.

Dangerous game to play.

Because Montreal has opted for a one year contract, the arbitrator will decide his salary on current comparables in the NHL. The amount will be saddled between the offer (Montreal) and the demand (PK).

In this fashion, even if Montreal has to renegotiate a deal in the coming year, we're looking at a possible total of 9 years on his contract. This would make him a UFA at 34.

looking it up, you are correct on how the salary is determined, for some reason I had misread that and was incorrect.
what my main fear would be if I was a Habs fan, is that if the Habs didn't want to pay Subban what he was worth this year, it could be awfully tempting next year to force the team to take him to arbitration for a one year deal and hit the ufa market early. Pay now, or lose later.

PK may not do this and he may be fine to take the one year and look at a longer term deal next year, but come next summer I'd be very uncomfortable as a Habs fan waiting to see if they could sign him long term.
