Bill, great write up on that 94-95 season. I look forward to the larger piece on that topic. It was fun to watch that team develop and grow and I think that team and season really brought even more interest in hockey and the Flyers, in general, to a certain generation of sports fans in the Delaware Valley.
You are correct, insofar as, this was Clarke's best work as GM. I think if I had a beef in looking back at Clarke's reign as GM, it was the lack of real player development process. If a draft didn't work out back then or if players didn't develop as you'd hoped, Clarke could just spend or trade around it. This was especially true, given Ed Snider/Comcast deep pockets. - johndewar
Bob Clarke managed 4 teams to the Cup Finals and another 4 teams to the conference Finals in 22 years.
That's not a bad career at all. |

this will cheer you up. 2 weeks ago we picked 20 lbs of pie cherries. I am growing the yeast from the dregs of Drei Fontainen gueze bottle and am planning on making my own version of kreik with the pie cherries, some belgian pale malt and the yeast. |

Ha! Forty or eighty feet, I used to love when he'd do that from the top of his own circles. That's more like 140-150 feet. He'd never miss either. I still can't figure out why other D men don't do that, it's a brilliant play.
The other thing Pronger used to do was when going back in his own zone for a loose puck, that one forechecker on his tail would be gaining, but Pronger would always use his body and the minimum amount of speed to get to the puck and make the play. He was damn fun to watch he really was.
Kudos to the Flyers HOF inductees, especially Lindros. Still the best player I've ever seen on a game in/game out basis and a hero for his stance on concussions. Well deserved. - fls13
I remember one time Pronger lining up and firing away at one of the agitating forwards. He was on his side of the blue line and fired away. It was so funny. The broadcasters tried to pretend it was unintentional. Pronger could dot an i from 200 feet away though and everyone knew it |

Here's some quick Flyers trivia. Lindros has the highest PPG average of any Flyer ever at 1.35 PPG. Who's second? |

Kerr is at 1.08, great number but not him. Barber's at .997. Giroux's at .908. Gagne's at .774. |

Of course there was also Luke Richardson firing the puck at Bill Boughner's chest (sp) to save Keith Jones from extinction in the 2000 playoffs.
One of my best regular season memories of Pronger was humiliating the Lightning playing the 1-3-1 or whatever they employed when he and Lavvy were making a point about the defensive system they employed. Pronger just kept going behind the net with the puck to embarass them and they kept peeling off. That was the last coach with the scar on his face
Of course the Flyers lost the game, but it was national news for hockey.

He had strong possession numbers with everyone on the team. Umberger was the opposite with the jackets - PhillySportsGuy
That's not entirely accurate. He spent more than half of his ES ice time with Johannsen had had a 50.2 CF% playing with him. When he played down the lineup his lines weren't nearly as effective at generating shot opportunities/preventing them. |

I'm saying the possession numbers of almost every player decreased when with Umberger and increased when with Hartnell.
If you want to make other arguments for why this trade will work then I understand. You really cant make any case based on Corsi though. |

I look at it like this. Unless something huge happens, our chances of winning the cup are 0.00001%.
We're the Washington Capitals at this point.
We should have either rebuilt or retooled. Not tried to do both.
Our defense will be another year older this year. Our core players another year older and another year closer to UFA (and bigger pay days in some circumstances).
Hextall at least see's the long game. Which is refreshing. |

I personally hope that orange has blue mixed in with it... as in, a team in NY.
Most overrated player I've seen in years. I still don't get why so many people are high on this kid? He's got speed, and he's got skill. But people are throwing out ridiculous numbers for an unproven, and quite frankly defensive liability. He's constantly hanging his teammates out to dry by going deep into the offensive zone, he's a puck hog.. I mean, if he want's to be a forward, why doesn't he switch positions? If it wasn't for Price in net, and his teammates covering position for him, he wouldn't look near what he does. "Oh, but he won the Norris"... yeah, since the Norris has become the most offensive defenseman. To me, and I know most people will argue with me, he's a $5mil/year player at most right now.
I mean, people are talking crazy numbers... give the kid anything he wants. Really? Because there is no way no how in my book he deserves anything close to what guys like Weber get, or Lidstrom got(comparable) when he was playing, let alone more than them.
I just don't get it. Montreal fans like to say "Have you even watched any actual games?!".. Umm, yeah.. I have... a lot, actually. And I just don't see a $10mil/year player. I see a cocky kid who thinks he deserves the world, but has only earned a country.
Hey.. jmo. People can shake their heads at me all they want, and call my opinion "wrong"... It's just my opinion.. and my opinion is that I never want to see him on the Flyers, especially at $10+mil/season, unless he turns into Lidstrom+Potvin+Coffey+Orr reincarnated. Not to mention his self-centered cocky attitude that just seems to earn the respect of everyone around the league, including his teammates.
Again.. just my opinion... hate on it all you want... - WarriorHockey21
I respect your opinion. I agree he isn't worth 10 mil a year (probably more like 7.5 or 8). But I don't think he's as a defensive reliability as you think he is. He's no Lidstrom defensively for sure but I think he does a great job of seperating the body from the puck and using his speed and skill to skate it or pass it out of the dzone. He has tremendous recovery speed which allows him to be a little more aggressive with rushing the puck up the ice into the zone and on the forcheck. Also it's not exactly a bad thing to be a puck hog when you have as much skill as he does because the longer he has the puck on his stick the longer the other team does not. And I also think he's toned down the cockyness a little since he came into the league. Regardless I would say cockyness is a form of confidence which is vital to succeed in this league. |

It appears Subban's arbitration was a bit testy. Arbitrator will rule within next 48 hours. Both sides requested 1 year deal. |
