And plays 3/4 less defense

Holy crap, PK is a great player but $9 million is overpayment, especially at this point of his career, the series against us should have raised some red flags

You know, I really don't think it's an overpayment. Having him back there on defense is like having a John Tavares on defense. He's worth the money, but he didn't do Montreal ANY favors. The kid has already won a Norris and yea McDonagh outplayed him during the ECF but whatever

I mean holy crap

He's worth the $9M and will only get better but still...as a Habs fan I would've liked him take a little discount. Montreal's front office has treated him like poop though so what goes around comes around.

Will he only get better or will his defensive play or lack there of become more apparent? Chicago just opened up the case for the next lock out, it's coming with these contracts that eat up large % of the cap

I just don't see a way to NOT pay PK Subban $9M a year. If he was a Rangers, I'd be pissed he didn't take a small discount but we really have no choice. Similar to the Lundqvist situation.

I just don't get why they would drag Subban through the whole arbitration process and then give him exaclty what he wanted anyway

For 9 mil AAV I would have traded him. That is insane

What if he wanted 10M a year?

Or only a 2 year deal so he can become a UFA? Im sure there was a lot of negotiating that had to be done.

He's a great player but not as good as Doughty or Weber...or even McDonagh if you ask me.

Agree, but he's still one of the best in the league and obviously teams are banking on the cap going up significantly and doing so soon. Otherwise you don't see this deal or the Toews and Kane extensions. Price tags are going up but I'm still not too worried. Suddenly Girardi and McDonagh look like bargains and in McDonagh's case, an absolute steal.

He asked for like 8 in arbitration. They gave him 9. It's odd, no other way to put it.

It's also why it's fine to give Staal 6.

8.5M for 1 year. For 8 years which takes up a lot of his UFA years he's obviously going to ask for more.

lets really really really really try to enjoy the 5 years 23.3 million left on Ryan McDonagh's contract.

The Rangers have McDonagh and Girardi the next 5 years at close to the same cost Montreal has Subban

The last part of the article about Del Zotto is also interesting. With the guys that get signed around the league with problems these days, it's hard to believe that Del Zotto's rep is in such tatters where he can't find a job, only a 1 1/2 years after playing as well as he did. There has got to be some off-ice reason for him not being signed, because he literally can be had for almost no risk and some significant upside. Won't be happy if he signs with the Isles.

I think an Islander fan would probably tell us that Del Zotto probably would block a spot from one of their several legit NHL prospects, or isn't any better than some of the NHL guys they have already. I think they like guys like Hickey, Strait and Donovan, Reinhart is probably making the team, and of course their top 3 are Visnovsky, De Haan and Hamonic.

I agree with you though, I wouldn't want to see him on the Islanders.

Montreal's top pairing now makes just south of 16 million. Markov and Subban both have defensive deficiencies. The Rangers have Mcdonagh, Klein and Girardi for at least 4 more years at the combined price of like 14 million.

Am I missing something here?

Don't the Rangers have to extend him after January 1st to avoid his new contract counting against this year's cap?

No, players entering the last year of a multiyear deal can negotiate new contracts once the new league year opens; this year that was July 1st. A player who enters into a one-year agreement, like Zucc for example, have to wait until after January 1st to sign an extension. Staal could have been extended any time beginning July 1st with the new cap hit going into effect next season.

Thanks

Is that a new rule? I remember Hank waited until January 1st for his extension.
