My hope is for him to make Canada's WJC team. That'd be a nice feather in his cap.

when you look at Cap Geek and look at the Flyers, it's truly amazing how much money they spend on their blueline. Not one home grown defenseman, and pretty much all of them way overpaid.
- jimbro83

They are trying though. They've recently drafted Hagg, Morin, Gostisbehere, and Sanheim.

it's amazing just to look at the Flyers cap situation. They only have 5.1 million invested in their goaltending and are still 4.3 million over the cap.

There was a point a few years back when hearing the name "Sean Avery" in a blog made me want to jam hotsticks in my eyes, because there was entirely too much talk about Sean Avery. I feel that way about advanced stats rights now. I realize their utility. I don't deny they are useful. But, god oh mighty, the amount of discourse about them right now in the hockey world is just over the top.

I wonder what percentage of hockey fans actually like discussing advanced stats, or whether there is just a natural inclination to defend your blogger if they are advanced stats proponents -- i.e., I don't think all Rangers fans hate advanced stats, and I don't think all Lightning and Devils fans love them.

Personally, I used to like reading pieces on advanced stats (particularly from Glen), but not just the mere mention of them makes me want to set myself on fire. Sorry Glen.

- Pete V

All good. It's because there are a few ignorant hacks out there throwing the stats around like they are brand new and revolutionary but the smart ones realize what they really are. Too few of the writers are incorporating any thought of context in their work and they sound all righteous with their conclusions despite a shaky framework and argument.

Last thing I will say for a while on the subject: More and more of the beat writers (Custance with Strang being the most recent example) are starting to use the lingo. Why? I'd bet they are hearing those terms and/or the principles of advanced stats from NHL execs. Teams are using them, hell Toronto just hired a guy who specializes in them as assistant GM while firing two long time, old school hockey guys.

But once Pronger and now probably Timmonen go LTIR, they'll have have like 2.5 million in cap space. But they down side with is they probably lose their best defensemen for a little bit.

the Lecavalier signing is killing them, very weird team. Simmonds at 3.975 is one of the biggest bargains in the league though

I think Tavares is the biggest bargain, even though he is a doosh bag Ice-lander

I think Pacioretty at 4.5 million a year for Montreal is a huge bargain

Athough it's a real long contract, Jeff Carter at $5.2 million is a real bargain on the cap hit.

Okay so depending upon what happens with this Hayes kid, do you give Penner a flyer at 1 year/1.1mil? I think he would help out round the bottom 6 and you can slot him up if needed

I know under the new CBA you can take back cap space in trades. I wish they would allow teams just to straight up trade cap space for assets. The trade deadline would get freaky then

I don't think the Rangers are interested in bringing in any forwards who can't keep up with AV's up tempo game plan

it's definitely been purposely done this summer to bring guys who can skate well into the mix

No interest in Penner, if he couldn't play with Getzlaf in Anaheim or Backstrom in Washington, what does that say about his talent level? If looking bottom six, rather someone like Carcillo who knows the system, was fairly effective, better in a checking line role and likely will be cheaper.

I want to see at least 1 younger guy get a chance. You keep bringing in veterans not sure any of them do.

I think the Rangers are pretty much done, unless they can land Hayes. But, if they weren't, wouldn't Setoguchi be a better fit than Penner? Seto hasn't signed anywhere has he.

Cheap depth is generally a good thing, but it doesn't limit the spots for Pack players to make the jump.

We still need to unload a contract in order to sign Hayes, other than that I agree we're looking at the team heading into camp and until Duclair makes the team
