I thought Raanta did a fairly good job when Crawford was down with an injury. He just looked shaky after Crawford came back from injury getting spotty playing time here and there. I think Raanta would have benefited more by being sent down to Rockford after Crawford came back from injury and finished the season in the "A."

I do agree, I believe he will progress this season. That's what I hope, anyways.

As for another veteran goalie in Rockford, I would have hoped that Bowman would have brought one in this summer, instead of Scott Darling.

Darling wasn't too bad in the couple of starts I saw him play in Milwaukee. He looks to be another big-bodied goalie who helped carried the load when Rinne was out and Milwaukee's regulars were re-called to Nashville. He looks like he could be one of those low-risk/high-reward signings, provided he pans out. I know Simpson was not one of Dent's favorites, and I haven't seen enough of Carruth to really say anything.

The challenge is finding a veteran goalie who's willing to play in the AHL. There's not much on the UFA market now.

Good point.

Dan Ellis in Florida will be in the AHL this season. Same with Markstrom in Vancouver. Beyond that, there are not too many hanging out there, unless the organization wants to go with an AHL veteran.

I thought about Markstrom, but he's bad. I saw him play after the Canucks acquired him and it wasn't pretty.

Ellis would be a good option if Florida would be willing to part with him. Ellis for the rights to K Hayes

Ellis for Roszival? Then hide Ellis's cap hit in Rockford?

That could solve some cap problems...

If Stan goes with a roster of 22 and acquires/signs a 7D for $875,000 or less that works out great, at least for us. While the Panthers have Soupy and Mitchell they could use Rozsival's veteran presence on the blueline.

Give Stan a call and make it happen!

If Ellis is the answer, may as well roll with one of the young guys. Ellis isn't going to help anyway. He is pretty bad too.

It's one way to solve the cap problem. It isn't my favorite idea of taking care of it, but it's one way of becoming cap compliant.

Ellis isn't great, but we're not going to get much better as a #3 goalie who will likely spent most (if not all) his time in Rockford.

I disagree.

Simpson did not look great at all last season, and Dent couldn't want to yank him every chance he got. Carruth hasn't seen much action beyond the ECHL level. Darling has never seen NHL action, but put up some decent numbers in Milwaukee last season.

As much as I don't really care for Dan Ellis, I wouldn't mind having him in Rockford as an insurance policy in case Crawford and Raanta are both on the shelf at the same time. Someone with some NHL experience.

There is a reason Ellis is unsigned. He sucks DK. A lot. You know what is there with him and it isn't very good.

If the injury to Crow is long term, they are screwed anyway. In the sort term, Raanta gets the start and you have kid riding the bench soaking up the experience.
Why bother with a veteran who isn't very good to begin with instead of a kid who MAY have a future in the organization. Its the way I would do it.

If those two go down. Which is highly improbable, Ellis isn't going to be the answer. May as well run a kid out there and see what you have.

Ellis has one more year on his deal at $900,000. Ellis may not be that good, but there aren't many options for a 3rd goalie. Plus, we need to make a deal to get cap compliant so Rozy for Ellis helps with that.

I'm not saying I want Ellis (or somebody equivalent) to play even 1 minute in Chicago, he'd just be an insurance policy.

Insurance against what? Screw having a terrible veteran blocking kids getting playing time. Especially veterans who suck. We both have seen enough of that.

Unless Darling shows that he has some game this coming season, there isn't much of anything down on the farm worth mentioning.

Which kids are you referring to? Carruth and Simpson don't appear to be promising prospects.

Both of those kids. Crawford wasn't exactly prime material at their age either. The whole league knows Ellis is terrible. Why bother with him. And him playing in Rockford just further limits any possible development that Simpson or Carruth can gain. Goalies are funny. Some develop right away and others take more time. I would rather invest the time in their development than having a hanger on like Elllis.

So two guys who just completed their first or second pro seasons are bust? As goalies? I disagree.

If Crawford alone goes down, and Raanta becomes the starter, I fear they're screwed.

Certainly not the best answer for a long play-off run.

Or maybe Stan can sign Brookbank to play goalie. If he can play D and LW why not give goalie a try?
