As long as folks keep putting Toews, Crosby, Stamkos, and Getzlaf ahead of him I think he is being underrated.

He'd be the forward I'd pick to build a team around.

- Marc D

I probably agree with this. If he's Pen or a 'Hawk, he'd be in the Art Ross conversation, along w/ the Selke.

New topic: Most underrated player in the league?

My vote: Frans Nielsen

- Tomahawk

Good one. Pavel Datsyuk although he's older now. Kopitar.

Edit: I also feel like Varlamov doesn't get the recognition he deserves

Pretty much. All three are good players.

And if they trade sharp while non compliant the return won't be much better than when they traded Ladd, Buff, etc.... Or when we dealt Gagne. Other teams know they need to be compliant and will leverage that.

It'll be interesting.

- moylander

They traded Ladd and Byfuglien, and what happened? They won another Cup. They have 3.2M for the following year, if they trade Sharp, that's another 5M. If the Cap goes up 5M that's 13M. Like I said the cap issues are exaggerated. As long as you have a core of Toews, Kane, Seabrooke, and Keith. They're going to have a top team.

His production is currently repressed by systems and tactics.

13 million to sign 3-4 Defenseman and 3-4 forwards including Leddy and Sadd who will take half that amount. They are not out of the woods yet.

I don't agree with this, he is still playing 21 minutes a night with decent linemates and optimum PP time. He might matchup against other teams best lines but so does Toews and to a lesser extent Crosby. They are a hard forechecking team, they don't sit back and play defensive like a trap, they just keep grinding you down by keeping it in your zone.

Loved having Rico on the team....even at the end, he was still not bad.

Everytime I think of Desjardins, I think of that time when Clarke stripped the captaincy from Lindros and gave it to Rico and Claude Lemieux (according to a Rick Tocchet story) asked Rico during a game if the "C" on his jersey stood for "selfish".

- johndewar

I heard a story about a small fracas in the workout room that season were Lindros was female dogging it, maybe about losing the C, maybe with Rico and LeClair intervened.

This pic was taken after chip gave Hexy and holmer a nice shot "well if you don't like the damn guy why don't you just cut him like we did!"

Imagine hockey with the ability to cut players, and not have cap issues.....

You're right, he won't. But obviously by the fact that I've been criticizing Ovenckin's all around game, I'm not comparing him. Just using Yzerman as an example of how a one dimensional player remade his game. So there is no excuse for Ovechkin not getting better all around and paying more attention to defensive detail.
- MJL

I think that when OV gets his Federov it's more likely that "Federov" has a better chance at changing his game to compliment OV than the other way around. I haven't seen a more one dimensional player in this niche since Brett Hull who was mentioned earlier.

I wonder where Kopitar would be ranked if he were from the True North Strong and Free.

Neither LeClair nor Desjardins wanted the C or felt the Flyers handled the situation appropriately, so I'd suspect your "story" was a happy little fiction.

They forecheck like the d1ckens, but there's very little creative freedom in the way they play... it's all very rigid and regimented... they rarely take chances if it means breaking support.

Kopitar is fine and all, but I can't agree with any part of this.

Yeah I'm trolling a bit here but was serious about Anze being underrated.
For all around game he is close to being the best at the current time.
If anyone picks Toews ahead of him I wouldn't argue too strongly.

They did well with that Lester trade. Cespides is controllable for another year and one of the good young power hitters in the league. Plus, Lester will probably re-sign with Boston in the offseason after he gets to chase another ring with the A's.
