PK's screwing himself here... his ask is way too reasonable. He should be pushing for 10+. He's a Norris winner, and the team's best player. Montreal should be pumped to sign him for 8 mil per year.
- jtommyt

A questionable Norris winner, besides alot of experts think his game still needs to get some fixing. At times is positioning is way off ,and add to that his ''supposed'' (I say that because I don't think it's a problem) attitude problem.

People, please realize that this is for an RFA 1 year contract and not long term. The real negotiations are being done for a long-term contract (which included 2 RFA years and a max of 6 UFA years). If the Habs sign him long term, Habs are definitely offering more that the 5M. A final deal would look more like "the first 2 years (RFA years) will be around 6.5 the the last 6 years will be ranging from 8.5 to 13.5. Making the AAV for 8 years between 8 and 9 million"

No panic needed

You do realize that 5m offer is the starting point on a 1 year deal
- MTL1

Even as a starting point, $5M is ridiculous.

Again, Bergervin and the Habs organization are idiots if they think that this is acceptable.

MB is using he same tactic used with Eller. Modest raises for RFA years then big payday a for UFA years. PK has to tell his agent to make a 8yr deal happen at all costs, but drag it to the last minute to maximize the cash out of the team. I would guess we see a 8yr x 7.6-7.8 mill per. I'm not really worried. PK whined in the media before his last contract and he got hammered. Now he's saying all the nice things to try to get public opinion on his side to put pressure on the Habs. This is not a new tactic in high end player negotiations.

The reason this isn't a slam dunk is because PK,while awesome, can still be a bit better everywhere in his game. He hasn't taken his team to the finals (though you could argue that he would have if Price wasn't submarined).

This deal will prob happen the night before or just before the arbitration hearing. No player wants to go from negotiating based off your strengths to hearing the same ppl you work for tell a stranger all your flaws and point out what players better than you make. It is obviously a embarrassing and insulting process for the player.

Last minute deal and PK takes just under 8 million.

Who would you have taken off the Canadian Olympic team (that won every game mind you) in favor of Subban?

As a Sens fan, it kind of reminds me of the Alfie sistuation .... GM low-balls assuming that the player will understand that this is a back and forth game that is played .... player gets insulted, says FU and moves on..... GM is left wondering WTF, that was only my opening number, I was going higher.......

fait attention avec des negotiations entre les etoiles ......

- GadesnSens

Difference is the Alfie situation was a true insult because of all the years Alfredsson gave to the Ottawa organization. Subban is not at that level yet.

I fully realize that, but from the organization's perspective the idea of starting at $5M as "a negotiation number" is unrealistic.

If PK only has 2 years of RFA status remaining, then at this point Habs fans should be very afraid of a 2yr deal that takes PK to UFA.

Has the organization learned it's lesson from a couple years ago? We shall see...

I don't know that he was talking about him being scratched. I think he was referring to the fact that there were mumblings he wasn't going to be named.

I'm a huge PK fan and I wouldn't have changed the team. I might argue he should have been dressed on the bench instead of Hamhuis. He never saw minutes and it would have helped to have PK on the power play at times but it's not like there's anything to complain about with a gold medal.

Here is an an easier break down for every one:

RFA year 1: 6.5
RFA Year 2: 6.5
UFA Year 1: 8.5
UFA Year 2: 8.5
UFA year 3: 9.5
UFA year 4: 9.5
UFA year 5: 11
UFA year 6: 11

AAV: 8.88

The offer is not a low ball it is just RFA years

Habs almost beat Rags with a AHL goalie. Then Rags got spanked in the finals. Price makes a difference every time he plays. If you don't see that you are blind.

Anyways, deal will get done with the Habs and all will be forgotten.

If he signed that proposed 5x5 deal 2 years ago - he would become a ufa in 3 years with 30 teams bidding

Today there is only 1 team bidding for a max 8 year deal

The clear difference is that pk will deliver on his long term deal

The only sticking that will be happening is dion sticking it to the leafs over the next 7 years to the tune of 49M

Waaaaait a second... people here think that Phaneuf's contract is bad? Why haven't I seen anybody saying so before?
