Well I'm going out on a limb and going with Bennett. If he gets injured again people will flip their poop

Yeah, I can see that. I'm thinking it might be Despres (or another young d-man) because he will be given top minutes and have some lapses (which will happen with young defense men) but people will freak and over react.

Ideally, you improve the players on the bottom 6 at a similar price to those you are replace or just general good value. So Goc, Comeau, Downie signings were all means of improving on Glass, Pyatt, etc without paying more. JR made some great strides in that department

I get that its hard to have your cake and eat it too, but I think its valid for people to complain about given that we could use $5.5M on something better than Sutter and Spaling.

If they make this all work with the cap AND Spaling turns out to be a competent, every day 3rd line player....then I have no problem with it.

Did Mario call and ask you to kick in on the salaries? We improved that's all I care about I don't pay their paychecks. Is Booth and the likes a huge upgrade over those 2? Nope they aren't. So in my eyes there wasn't any real investment risk when the players you are targeting are lateral moves. Just my 2 cents and full disclosure I'm not an operations guy in the league

HEY I have valid reasons for not wanting dupes in top 6... and thats bc he isn't top 6... and I blame DB... I have full faith he will be on 3rd line and will help the team that way and this will let guys like BB and maybe even kap get top mins with the best players...

Let the kids play...

hah! Understandable. Just stirring the pot a bit. I am sitting through an orientation video bored out of my (frank)ing mind.

I mean...I get your point...but there's a difference between improving and overpaying.

Some writers I've read and people around the league think Sutter could bring back quite a bit in a trade. I'll take it with a grain of salt but if we can move him for something decent (not just a salary dump) then we should do it. If not, then we slightly overpay and keep him.

Its easy to say trade him for picks/prospects but they would have to be significant enough to warrant the trade.

Where have the Penguins overpaid?? 2.2M for a solid 3rd liner is a good deal. Overpaying is paying Pouliot 4M, or Komorov 3M, or Kulemin 4.1M. That's overpayment.

I like spaling signing , I think he can prove his worth , although we'll see ... Sutter is now the odd man out, at least the FO has all the leverage over him, I mean the worst that could happen was to make him sit for a year, not ideal but they actually HAVE that option. I'm sure Bartley would rather have that then him play for free but JR has all the power, what an idiot not to file for arbitration ?

I guess it's an ok deal only if spaling plays like the 3rd liner we expect him too. Wondering about sutter now

Maybe he figured the arbitrator wouldn't give him a good deal based on his stars last year, that's really all I could think of. Sure, he played with plugs, but I don't think the arbitrator cares.

Penguins most common bottom 6 from last year (based on games played) - Sutter, Glass, Vitale, Adams, Pyatt, Megna, Kobasew

Penguins projected season opener bottom 6 this year: Sutter, Spaling, Downie, Goc, Comeau, Adams, Megna

That's a hell of a lot better.

How can you talk about investment risk if you aren't directly dealing with Mario?!

Seriously, that was a really sh*tty comment man. Sorry I have an opinion about shaping the roster without personally having money involved in signing these players. Its a hockey message board.
