I think they are an 85-90 point team at best and that won't get em in the playoffs
- BiggE

With the Cup drought approaching 4 decades, kind of hard to swallow that they aren't a contender. But it is what it is. Hopefully Hextall can stay away from handing out long term deals at crazy money for marginal guys, and not deal draft picks like they are trading cards. If that happens, they will be headed in the right direction.

Giroux strikes me as the kind of player that will experience productive longevity.. like a MSL. The only core forward I was afraid would decline before the D kids arrived was Hartsy... and he's gone now.
- Tomahawk

The worry for Giroux is he plays much more physical than MSL and could start to break down. I don't think he will be useless in 4 years, but I would choose today 4 1st rd picks over him starting with this upcoming draft. Even if they miss out on top 3, the depth created would be hard for other teams to matchup with the way the Flyers draft and this current team with Giroux isn't going anywhere any time soon.

They have a solid goaltender now, some experienced players (Jokinen, Thornton) and young players who can play well. I'd say their defense may be their Achilles's heal, but I expect them to at least be better than last year. Perhaps squeak in the bottom wild card slot.

There is no guarantee that the young defense will be ready in 3-4 years. Which is why it's a bad plan to sit and wait for that, and to waste prime years of players such as Girox.
- MJL

Your right but how do the Flyers acquire the elite players they need on defense when the league as a whole doesn't trade them? And the Flyers aren't one player away where they can deplete their farm system and not be mired in mediocrity for years, like they are now because of among other things the Pronger trade.

G isn't as good of a skater as MSL was though. G is such a good PP player though, so I think he'll always be able to help in that area

What do we know about the rookie game? I'm assuming Morin, Sanheim, Alt, Gostisbehere, Hagg and Pettersson are all gonna be in it? With Anthony Schultz in net?

I would completely disagree with that. There is no way I choose the 4 draft picks over Giroux. Do you think Edmonton is on their way to being a true contender?

I admit, I had to look that up.

Analogy spot on though.

Have to build through the draft. In the cap era, it's imperative to have cost controlled players not only contribute, but be anchors in order to compete at the highest level.

I don't share the view that the Flyers are mirred in mediocrity. They have a strong nucleus of core players, and I think they're a very good team. My point is that if the right move presents itself, the Flyers should make it, rather then waiting for the young defense to develop. I think the Pronger trade was a great trade, and it was the career ending injury that hurt them, rather then the trade.

As long as Giroux doesn't skip leg day, he'll be fine:

Not remembering Bruce Hoffort, I assumed that Hoffart was the proper spelling.

Edmonton is a bad drafting team. The work after the 1st rd show its. How much better would they be if they took Landeskog and Murray instead of RNH or Yakupov? Or even Seguin over Hall. There wasn't a consensus on those picks. Building an entire team of small skilled forwards without addressing defenseman, goaltending, or size upfront isn't a great way to build a team.

For bad drafting teams, 4 picks doesn't make sense. The Flyers aren't a bad drafting team.
