Lets throw this weirdness out there

Lets say either by the end of his bridge contract or maybe there is an impasse and no bridge deal, Suban becomes available. Lets also say our D has not developed as hoped if its further down the road.

If a deal could me made riddle me this:

Does Suban currently play like a younger Doughty ? Could he be reined in enough to take the minutes of a #1 D and pick his spots for rushing the puck more,so he can not be gassed at the end.

I don't think you'd want to take away part of what makes him so dynamic. That's like asking Bobby Orr to be a stay-at-home defenseman (not comparing the two players). With Subban, you need to take the good with the bad, because there will be much more good than bad.

I wouldn't want to see him in a D-first system, but I also despise D-first systems to begin with.

Pretty much, maybe they win a round if Mason gets red hot, but I think final 8 is as far as they will go. I do, though, believe they are moving in the right direction.

Personally. I think if they can get past the NYR, they will be in the final 4. Which is possible. NYR have regresssed.

PK Subban is the NHL's Randall Cunningham... just turn him loose. It's amazing what's he's accomplished despite constantly having his wings clipped by Michel Therrien.

The way I see it. We dont need Vinny. He is a luxury, one of two forwards over 30 on the team and has a good shot. Never have too many guns on the PP.

I am not sure you can find a candidate to take on LeCavalier but if by some miracle he plays decent..

Same goes for Umberger, but I do think they will be stuck there too.

Namely, I hope they give Timonen a chance on a real contender. Grossmann may be an option.

I honestly dont care if we make the playoffs if we are just going to flop in the 1st rd. I just want to dump some of these defenders and let the kids play it out.

Wow, I had some great times too during parts of that decade

And some were worthy of brain washing to forget.

And of course 2 fixed cups involving the Flyers losing

Can anyone say 3 illegal goals in game 6 1980 and a team with coke heads/potential obstruction of justice in 1987

- Steelmanpa

a lot of things are worthy of forgetting in the 80s, like parachute pants and almost single vehicle.

i am only aware of 2 poop goals in the 80 final; the potvin high stick in the first period, and of course the gilles offside. what's the other?

i never really think about the 87 cup and losing having to do with the coke situation in edmonton. the only one i'm aware of being outed was grant fuhr, but there are probably others. i'm not sure that was a benefit for them. perhaps if they weren't doing that, they might have dispatched the flyers in 5.

either way, it all (frank)ing sucks.

The Flyers didn't play well at all against the Rags and Mason missed a good part of the series and they managed to get to a game 7. I wouldn't say that's fodder. Boston is still the class of the East imo.
- PLindbergh31

Boston did nothing to improve, lost Iginla and still have to sign Krug and Smith with -800K of cap space alloted to them. I'd be careful calling them the class of the East for now. They will get Savard on LTIR but that means they have just over 3 million to sign Smith and Krug. Not ideal.

Interesting stuff Bill, however, to be honest, I find discussing advanced stats about as much fun as watching paint dry. So, with that in mind, here is my top ten pure goal scorers in Flyers history!!

1. Tim Kerr
Good lord, if this guy could have stayed healthy, he would have likely scored over 600 goals. Lightning quick release, pinpoint accuracy and he was just about impossible to stop, at least by any legal means. It really is shame that Kerr was out with injuries during both the 85 and 87 finals, he was a guy who certainly could have made a difference

2. Reggie Leach
What, you were expecting Jay Rosehill?? They didn't call Leach the Rifle for nothing. While everyone remembers his powerful slapshot, Leach also had a deadly wrister and nasty snap shot as well. And who could ever forget his scoring of 5 goals in a playoff game against Boston, while being somewhere between drunk and hung over! His combined regular season and playoff total of 80 goals in 75-76 is still a team record and probably will be for a very long time!

3. Rick Macleish
Macleish had the best pure wrist shot in team history and was also lethal on the breakaway. While he would disappear for long stretches at times, much like Danny Briere, he seemed to save his best games for the biggest ones. His deflection of Andre Dupont's shot in game 6 of the finals vs Boston in 74 is arguably the biggest goal in Flyers history.

4. John Leclair
Not only was he as strong as a bear and as hard to move from the front of the net as an oak tree, Leclair also possessed a nasty snap shot with an extremely quick release and he also excelled at pouncing on rebounds and putting them in.

5. Eric Lindros
The big guy excelled in every facet of the game and that certainly includes goal scoring. His shot was heavy and accurate and he also had a lethal backhander as well.

6. Brian Propp
Propper had a wicked snap shot that was both heavy and accurate. He also had a very good knack of knowing when to shoot and when to pass.

7. Mark Recchi
Recchi was known more as a playmaker than a goal scorer for much of his career, but he was no slouch when it came to scoring. Recchi had a very good shot and a great nose for the net, and, for a small guy, he had absolutely no fear of working the dirty areas of the ice.

8. Bill Barber
You don't finish with 420 career goals if you don't know how to score! Barber had both a very good wrist shot and slap shot, and he excelled on getting his shots through on net when he worked the point on the powerplay.

9. Jeff Carter
Sure he had his faults when he was here, but scoring goals wasn't one of them! Carter may not of had the most accurate shot, but it was extremely heavy and he is one of the few guys in today's game that can beat a goalie with an unscreened wrist shot.

10. Jeremy Roenick
Now if JR scored goals as well as he runs his mouth, he would have scored over a 1000! That being said, he had a true nose for the net and could beat you with a variety of shots.

Just missed the cut
Danny Briere
Claude Giroux
Simon Gagne

You'd better hope the kids all play well despite having little to no pro experience if we're just going to "dump" some of the vets.

If the Flyers don't look to be in the hunt, and he agrees to move, I would ask Kimmo if he'd want to give it a go somewhere else. The guy deserves a Cup.

Also, most people thought the Devils were first round fodder in 2012. After squeaking by Florida, there was no way they'd ever beat Philly. And even if they did, they'd have to go up against NYR after that, so they were done there.

I'm not saying the Flyers are a world-class contender, but if you manage to make the playoffs, and get some breaks, you can make things happen.

All the core pieces to that team are there.

Dump Chris Kelly to EDM for a draft pick and their in good shape. They have a lot of guys in their pipeline to fight for ice-time like Spooner, Knight, Florek, and Khokalachev.

I think them, Tampa, and probably the Pens are early favorites in the East. Flyers are certainly in that top 4-5 team mix with the Rangers and probably Montreal.

So, going completely off topic for a bit: Will Cole Hamels be a Dodger by tomorrow afternoon? and, if so, will Rube the boob find a way to get swindled on the deal?

I'm thinking
1. Slight, but possible, chance
2. Well, duh, it's Amaro ain't it?

And no one thought the Devils defense was any good when Bryce Salvador was their top defenseman. If they team plays a system where they function as a 5-man unit on the ice, the defense is good enough. If you want to hang them out by themselves, they can be exploited.

We don't have a #1, but 1-7, they're probably middle of the pack in terms of total defense.
