What the fck is the difference?
- Jeropotato

The Maritimes are the provinces that are south of the Island of Newfoundland.

Why there is a distinction I cannot remember.

Hey, be nice. To be honest, I didn't think there was a difference, from what I understand the Maritime provinces are NL, NB, NS and PEI. The islands south of NF are St. Pierre and Miquelon but they belong to France.

Edit: I was wrong, I just looked it up and the Maritime provinces are NB, NS and PEI only.

Atlantic Canada is NB, NS, NL and PEI. The term was coined by Joey Smallwood because he didn't feel that Newfoundland fit into the culture of the Maritime provinces at the time so shouldn't share the name. Also the three Maritime provinces entered into confederation during the 19th century: New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were founding members of the Dominion of Canada in 1867, and Prince Edward Island joined in 1873. Newfoundland didn't join until 1949.

Well I just learned something new.

Their oldest colony until 1949, Sir Humphrey Gilbert established a settlement at St John’s in 1583.
