Beauchemin wasn't a shut-down guy... and they barely played together.

Komisarek just sucked.

And yea, it's going to be a bit of trial and error to see who fits where.... but lets put it this way, the team, last year, had one guy who deserved to be on a top pairing, or even in a top-4... and that was Phaneuf. Gardiner and Rielly sucked for most of the season, but looked good at the end.

So it's not out of the realm of possibility that one of the guys they brought in steps into that spot.

- Feeling Glucky?

i don't know what hockey you were watching, but noooooooooobody looked good at the end of the season

How have they done the last 3-4 years?

Signing crappy guys to contracts and missing the playoffs on purpose to get franchise players.

It hasnt worked out for them.

- jbold

same success rate as toronto

you have no ground to stand on as a leafs fan calling another team crappy jbold.. the leafs have been the least successful team in the last 10 years easy

Let's be real, Beauchemin didn't look great here because we had poop in goal and a coach who had no (frank)ing clue.

gardiner will be his partner.

phaneuf will continue to play his off side.. not focus on scoring (leaving that to gardiner) and be the responsible in his own end d-man

robidas and rielly will be the next pairing

franson ((frank) me trade this tool) and polak will be the third pairing.

- Dozzer

I still believe we need more adjustments to our defense... i like rielly gards phaneuf robidas but thats about it.... franson definitely needs to be traded

i'm okay with polak on the bottom pairing.. a bit overpaid but he is ideal for that role with some PK time

franson just sucks

Sorry not a coffin.

the leafs thinking might have changed on Franson.
The fancy stats peeps are not as down on him as leaf fans.

Blame Dubas..these are the same people he follows on twitter and talks to

Or they might move him for some cap space..it should be Clarkson..but thats not happening

omg those (frank)ers twisted everything around

they compared fransons best stats and picked and choosed whoever had bad stats and made the association

i'd be more convinced if they actually did the analysis one on one

i'm not a huge fan of phaneuf.. but he's a (frank) load better than franson... and they skewed the QoC numbers, and tried to baffle with bullpoop

man i hate PPP

fine.. put franson top pairing and see how that goes

adv stats are good.. and useful.. but can be taken too far and be twisted to say what you want them to say

The kid can skate the puck into the offensive zone on a powerplay like no other Leaf I've ever seen.

I'm filled with great hope.

Which of course will be crushed in the near future.

It's the cycle of disappointment that unites us all.

- Atomic Wedgie

He's good in the room, and he can always be traded to someone who needs help getting to the cap floor.

I think at even strength the pairs should be based on fit. The rest of ATOI that determines whether a guy is #1, #2, #3 etc, is determined by special teams anyways. So I won't mind seeing Phaneuf and Robidas at even strength, and Phaneuf getting shifts also with Gardiner and Rielly. What I more focus on is that the game plan is to have:
Phaneuf at 23 ATOI
Gardiner at 21 ATOI
Rielly at 20 ATOI
Robidas at 20 ATOI
Polak at 18 ATOI
Franson at 18 ATOI

I think our views on the Defense is really messed up from the last 2+ seasons of RC run team.

I would rather look at it from that viewpoint until we can actually see if its the players or the system.. maybe a bit of both.

I think Dion is a bigger issue because he is the "#1" ..which I dont see him as myself.

this coming season I have no idea what to expect

Do you see that big red light on your centre console? The one that says "Wedgie is playing along meter?"

Do you see how it is flashing red?

As per your actual factual comment, however, never say never (that rhyme was clever).

I'm guessing that two years ago, nobody thought that Kostka was going to be Dion's partner. We'll see what happens in training camp. I'm just sayin' it won't surprise me if they decide to take a wily stay-at-home vet and pair him with Dion.

Can't wait to see all the shock here in December when people realize how good the Phaneuf/Gardiner pairing is performing.

You have no ground to stand on either, because you're saying the way to go is signing below average UFAs, tank on purpose and get franchise players.

It hasnt worked for Edmonton and Florida..

Its what they do. They also leave out stats and make stats up just to try to get their opinion across.

I think in situations we're down a goal in a game and pressing, that it should happen. If we're defending a lead, I expect to see Robidas.

below avg UFA's

santorelli
booth
winnik

these are all 2-3 million dollar players.

as for edm, fla, etc...sure its the right way, but you have to pick the right players and trade/buy/sell at the right times.

Build like Red Wings
Trade like Chicago
Draft like Pitsburgh

there it is!
