My favourite argument is:

Why don't they just take that $7 million, and sign 3 guys at $2.5 million each to do the same job?

- Atomic Wedgie

hey... so instead of barely missing the playoffs and getting an alright pic we would really miss the playoffs and get franchise players

and it would cost less!

same place where an inexperienced offensive d-man is a better partner for Phaneuf than a veteran shut-down d-man.

he's dumb enough to play franson top PP

he's dumb enough to try polak with DP

Carlyle vs a toaster and Phaneuf vs a teleprompter, I have my money on the toaster and teleprompter.

Come on, just because hes a veteran SD dman doesnt mean hes a top 2 guy

It all depends on how pairings play together and how they are going up against certain competition

Beauchemin was a vet shutdown dman too, and we all know how he did in a Leafs jersey.. Same with Komisarek.

Can't really compare Schenn to Rielly. They play two different styles. And Rielly was in the NHL a full year after he was drafted, unlike Schenn who went straight into the lineup.

Ones is a smart, quick offensive Dman

The other is a slow, fat, stupid defensive Dman who tries to eat the puck rather than move it

I actually don't think Luke is dumb at all.....but he did lose a step along the way. Not sure why.

What makes me unafraid of Morgan's sophmore jinx is that he was very sheltered last season to start with and progressively his role grew as the season went on. Morgan is also a fitness nut, like Stamkos like fitness nut. He clearly wants to be the guy. I never got that feeling from Luke.

How have they done the last 3-4 years?

Signing crappy guys to contracts and missing the playoffs on purpose to get franchise players.

It hasnt worked out for them.

Franson was sheltered during Carlyles first season here. Now look at him

Franson was benched his first season here, then sheltered, then exposed.
I don't see the comparison with Rielly....and as Rielly became less and less sheltered, he actually started to produce more.

Beauchemin wasn't a shut-down guy... and they barely played together.

Komisarek just sucked.

And yea, it's going to be a bit of trial and error to see who fits where.... but lets put it this way, the team, last year, had one guy who deserved to be on a top pairing, or even in a top-4... and that was Phaneuf. Gardiner and Rielly sucked for most of the season, but looked good at the end.

So it's not out of the realm of possibility that one of the guys they brought in steps into that spot.

this is from an article Eric Tulsky did on QoC 2 years ago...fancy stats guy some team has hired..maybe the leafs..dont know

Quality of competition is very similar to shot quality: it plays a huge role in individual shifts/shots, but over the course of a season the differences across teams and players are small enough that it can usually be neglected.

These competition metrics provide valuable insight into what a coach thinks of a player and how he tries to use them, but in practice they do not show differences large enough to have significant impact on the player’s results.
