It's pretty clear that this is a treading water year for the leafs. They signed a bunch of one-year contracts and have real flex next year when the cap is going to go up significantly. This will be about seeing how Rielly improves, what kind of progress Gardiner, Kadri make and whether guys like Granberg make the team and progress.

When put that way, it sounds reasonable and I do think that would be the asking price.

You can make an arguement that Kadri and Kane are comparable. Their NHL PPG numbers are about 2 points difference over an 82 game season. While Kane has a physical edge, it is generally more difficult to find centers. They both have had attitude issues, but Kane's seem quite a bit worse.

Would I trade Kane for Kadri if I was Winnipeg? No.

The fact that there is even a discussion to be had comparing the two means that throwing in Gardiner (arguably the Leafs best D last year) and a 1st, which could easily be a lottery pick in the McDavid draft, is probably quite an overpayment.

Also, when big names move, it seems like the return is never as good as what you would expect.

Seriously? You really think the Leafs are going to pull off a deal with WPG for Kane? With what? The Jets will only pull the trigger on an over-payment and by doing so it is a lateral move if you have to deal guys like JVR, Gardiner/Rielly or Kadri - especially when you consider the glut of players the Leafs have on the wing this makes even less sense as a rumour...my source is called common sense. It is a very powerful tool.
