It might be the best spot for him. I know Berube likes Giroux with Voracek, and I think we all do. I look at it in terms of icing as many good lines as possible, so they can avoid the kind of usage that Couturier & Read saw last year.

Laughton could be pushed to a wing, too. Lecavalier might end up at RW, too.

I think Schenn can be effective at either, but whatever they do has to be predicated on what's best for the team. If Schenn is more effective at C than Lecavalier and Laughton, then he should be at xenter. They still may need to move somebody to address the defense

- Jsaquella

I don't think Laughton will play wing.

During this time they also had Darren McCarty, Chris Draper and Kirk Maltby. Maybe not known as Fighters themselves but they were scrappy players. Especially Darren McCarty will they let go to Calgary but then also brought back. What happened in 2007 to 2010 was then but 2014 is now. Detroit wants to become a tougher team. The Boston Bruins are probably the more balanced teams in the league and they're tough. I know they let Shawn Thornton walk but, Shawn Thornton is an enforcer no matter how you look at him.

I disagree, Detroit has finished 29th or 30th in fighting majors for nearly each of the last 20 seasons and last time I checked, they were pretty damn successful.

Heck even when they last carried enforcers, it was guys like Kocur and Probert who had enough talent to both take a regular shift and contribute. If a fight is necessary, between Simmonds, Luke Schenn, and Grossmann they will be fine. However, I think the league is quietly doing whatever they can to remove fighting from the game, so I really think it is quickly becoming a moot point.

- BiggE

I am not talking about enforcers... We have Rosehill. I am just talking about guys like Hartnell, Downie,Talbot,Hall... Guys who can play quality minuted but have edge to their game. Simmonds will pick his fights and he is usually very smart. Detroit had guys like Draper and. Holmstrom during their glory days, guys who were chippy players but could play quality minutes

They need to decide- like you said: based on what's best for the team- but most importantly they need to KEEP HIM THERE ffs
- Giroux_Is_God

I think consistency and linemates who better compliment his game will help him immensely.

Those kind of players I like. I just think the day of the one dimensional enforcer is over and I would rather see Rosehill's spot go to someone who can contribute a bit more. Heck I'd rather waive Rosehill and re-sign Hall to be a spare. At least Hall can come in, play all 3 forward positions, win faceoffs and kill penalties. He'd be a nice 13th forward IMO

They couldn't afford to bring a few of their players back. Do you think they just let Jerome Iginla walk?

He's willing to do so, and if he makes the team and they have Lecavalier, he might have to do so.

If he's playing third line LW, I'd have no issue with it. He's definitely more experienced at C, but again, he might be a Phantom, too.

Maltby, Draper and McCarty were all solid to good players, they were not one dimensional enforcers by any stretch of the imagination, and even Thornton is a much more complete player than Rosehill.
- BiggE

To further your point, Draper and Maltby were fantastic defensive hockey players who also garnered some Selke attention during certain years. McCarty had decent wheels and enough skill to play 3rd/4th line minutes.

I don't know if Shawn Thornton is better than Rosehill, but I do think Thornton is a knucklehead.

I like the fact that the young players will need to earn their spots rather then being handed one. That being said, I think Laughton will earn a spot on this team. He may start on the 4th line, but I think he will get occasional shifts on other lines and see some time on the pk.

And how would they have done this? Jerome Iginla was a player worth keeping, he was their lead goal scorer. Shawn Thornton was a big part of one of the best fourth lines in the business the last number of years. One that includes winning a Stanley Cup.

Agreed. Get a jack of all trades as a spare fwd, gives you more options in case of injury

Agreed. I've always thought Adam Hall, even in his Tampa and Pittsburgh days, was a good forward to have around as a 4th liner.

That's what I like about him, he can play different roles, plus he's not going to be shy when the going gets rough

Last season:
Thornton 64 5 3 8
Rosehill 34 2 0 2

From what I've seen he is a better player than Rosehill, but as you put it, he is a knucklehead as well and I wouldn't want him on my team. Now if we could find a couple of guys similar to Draper, Maltby or McCarty, I'd be all for it!

And, I'd much rather have a vet sitting some games in the press box rather than a younger guy like Rinaldo or Akeson.

No doubt, from what I've seen and read about him in Junior, Laughton will have no fear when it comes to playing physical and mixing it up.

It's why I think he might be used at wing, at least this upcoming season. I could see him taking Downie's spot with Couturier & Read

No doubt but like I said, I don't want Simmonds to have to be the enforcer for this team. I'm aware of what both Detroit and Boston have done but this is Philadelphia. There are a lot more holes here and in my opinion not comparable to Stanley Cup winning teams at the moment.

I very well could be wrong in how Laughton will be used by I totally buy what I've read on the Flyers web site.
