actually these salaries only reaffirm that the owners were completely justified in locking out the players 2 years ago. - DoubleDown
And yet they keep handing it out like candy. |

So Brassard was asking for 4.95M/yr for 1yr and the Rangers were offering him 3.5M, they settled at 5M/yr for 5 yrs - Pea-Brain
Not bad for a 3rd line center
edit: Or is he their 2nd line now? I forgot Richard left... |

Very easy to understand the concept of buying UFA years.
Apparently not. |

we're just seeing an upward shift in salaries and we need to start re-calibrating our expectations. second-tier players are moving into the $6-$7 million range (Stastny, Phaneuf), third tier guys like Brassard into the $5 million range etc. it's just the new norm. GMs must be under the impression that the cap is going to be rising significantly. |

I totally agree.
In 4 years, the cap increased by 17%. This is even counting the lockout year which took a step back.
People always look at what a guy signed 4 years ago and compare without adding the inflation.
Plek signed for 5mil in 2010-11. Today, if he were to have another great season, he would sign 6 mil.
I don't like Eller's contract because it's 4 years and I want to see 27 at center, but if MB has a plan to move someone, it's not a bad cap hit for a 3rd liner. |

They have high taxes and ridiculous cost of living.... They need to sign players for lots of money.

I would say of course, especially if they're making less than $2M on a short term deal without a NTC. Realtor and legal fees are gonna far outweigh any benefit to buying. |

i would assume that for any team, the majority of players do not own property in the city where they play. |

That would probably more expensive then buying a place. I don't know though..
Probably, but my guess, with the millionaire lifestyle, their rent is likely above 20k/month. |
